SCHENECTADY, N.Y. (1/29/10) - Freshman Corey Stearns had two goals and an assist as the Princeton women's hockey team skated to a 3-0 win at Union on Friday night. Stearns had the primary assist on Princeton's first goal late in the first period and then scored two in the second period in the team's fourth shutout of the season.
Princeton took a 1-0 lead with 4:33 left in the first period on a power-play goal from Melanie Wallace that was assisted by Stearns and Danielle DiCesare. The goal was her fifth of the season and handed Princeton a lead it would never relinquish.
After Wallace gave Princeton the only goal it would need, Stearns provided the insurance in the form of her fourth and fifth goals of the season coming at 4:58 and 13:53. The first goal was assisted by Paula Romanchuk and Maddie Endicott had a helper on the second.
Princeton outshot Union 41-16 in the game. Rachel Weber made all 16 saves to earn the win, while Alana Marcinko stopped 38 in a losing effort.
Princeton is now 10-9-3 overall and 8-4-3 in the ECAC. The Tigers continue their weekend on Saturday afternoon at Rensselaer.
