Quinnipiac Continues to Roll
HAMDEN, Conn. - Senior forward Janine Duffy scored her 10th goal
of the year and the game-winner as the Quinnipiac University
women's ice hockey team defeated Wayne State, 2-1,for their fifth
consecutive win Friday afternoon. Junior Kelley Davies (Chesapeake,
Va.) scored the team's first goal as the Bobcats improve to 12-7-6
on the year. With the loss, the Warriors drop to 8-10-3 in their
season.
After a scoreless first, the Bobcats' offense sparked back-to-back
goals just 11 seconds apart in the second period. Freshman
defenseman Regan Boulton (Brandon, Manitoba) got the first goal
started in the defensive zone when she dished to sophomore Kate
Wheeler (Oakville, Ontario) at the Wayne State blue line. Wheeler
turned and passed to Davies inside the right faceoff circle where
Davies ripped a low shot into the lower left corner of the net for
her fourth goal of the year. The assist was Wheeler's tenth of the
season, and it was Boulton's fifth.
Seconds later, the Bobcats struck again with a goal right off the
faceoff. Duffy won the faceoff back to sophomore defenseman Jordan
Elkins (Wasilla, Alaska) where she skipped the puck to senior
forward Kallie Flor (Farmington, Minn.) at the right boards. Duffy
streaked from center ice where Flor fed her the puck just above the
right faceoff circle. Duffy skated into the circle and fired a shot
into the upper left corner for her tenth goal of the year. The
assist was Flor's sixth and it was Elkins' fourth of the
season.
The Warriors cut the lead in half when defenseman Ciara Lee
notched her first goal of the season at the 7:09 mark of the third
period. Wayne State sophomore Micheline Frappier won a faceoff in
the offensive zone and deflected the puck back to Lee in the high
slot. Lee blasted the puck into the upper right corner of the net
for the goal.
Quinnipiac goaltender Victoria Vigilanti (Woodbridge, Ontario)
recorded 15 saves, including eight stops in the third period, in
her eleventh win of the season. Warriors' goaltender Delayne Brian
turned aside 42 shots in the loss.
With its fifth consecutive win, the Bobcats' record improves to
five games over .500. The record is the best held in program
history, as the Quinnipiac women's ice hockey team has never
recorded more than one game over .500 in the previous eight
seasons. The five consecutive wins shatters the preceding record,
as the team has never compiled more than two consecutive wins in
program history.
Quinnipiac and Wayne State will face off again tomorrow afternoon
at the TD Bank Sports Center. That game is scheduled to start at 4
p.m.
