Ryabkina's Pair Paces Harvard Over Union

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Liza Ryabkina tallied two goals, while
Leanna Coskren and Jillian Dempsey added a tally apiece to propel
the sixth-ranked Crimson women’s hockey team to a 4-0 win
over Union Friday evening at Bright Hockey Center. Laura Bellamy
earned her first career shutout, making 13 saves.
During Harvard’s second power play of the first period,
Coskren one-timed a pass from Dempsey to give Harvard (10-4-4,
8-4-2 ECAC Hockey) a 1-0 lead at 15:41. The Crimson won the faceoff
after Union (5-19-1, 1-11-1) was called for hitting after the
whistle and Cori Bassett played the puck into the Dutchwomen zone.
Dempsey, skating through the right faceoff circle, sent a pass to
the left side of the crease and Coskren wristed the puck through
Alana Marcinko. Coskren now has five goals on the season, the most
for a Harvard defender.
In the second, Ryabkina made it a 2-0 contest as she blasted a
shot into the back of the net at 14:40. Anna McDonald battled a
Union defender behind the net, before winning control of the puck
and carrying it in front of the goal. McDonald slid a pass to
Ryabkina, who moved into the slot for Harvard’s second
goal.
Midway through the third period, Harvard scored its first
shorthanded goal of the season, as Dempsey scored from the slot
after receiving a pass from Kate Buesser at 10:09. Three minutes
later, Ryabkina netted an unassisted goal as she fired a shot from
the center of the blue line. The puck soared over Marcinko’s
shoulder, lighting the lamp at 13:14.
The Crimson, which outshot the Dutchwomen, 53-13, for the game,
held an 18-3 advantage in shots in the third period. Harvard was
1-for-7 on the power play, while keeping Union scoreless on two
chances with an extra attacker.
Harvard concludes its stretch of four consecutive home games
against Rensselaer Saturday at 4 p.m.
