Smith Scores Twice as Saints Blank Eagles
St. Lawrence University senior assistant captain Britni Smith scored two goals while rookie Brooke Fernandez picked up the first goal of her collegiate career to pace the Saints to a 4-0 victory over Boston College in Chestnut Hill, MA on Friday afternoon.
Though St. Lawrence (10-7-6) let a two-goal cushion in Thursday's game against the Eagles (5-9-9) slip away, the visitors used outstanding effort on both ends of the ice to earn the shutout win. The Saints outshot Boston College 44-16, while seniors Brittony Chartier and Maxie Weisz combined for 16 saves in the shutout performance.
"I thought we gave a great effort and really moved the puck well throughout the game," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "It is always a fun, up-and-down game with Boston College, and both of our goalies played well to earn the shutout."
The Scarlet and Brown kept consistent pressure on Boston College goalie Kiera Kingston in the first period, outshooting the Eagles by a 14-3 margin. Though Kingston made 13 stops, Smith beat her at 15:45 for her sixth goal of the season on the power play. First-year student Kayla Sullivan and sophomore Vanessa Emond picked up assists on what would prove to be the game-winning tally.
The two non-conference foes skated to a scoreless second period that saw the visitors outshoot the home team by a narrower margin (8-6). Chartier, who made three stops in the first period, matched that number in the second before giving way to Weisz midway through the frame. The Severna Park, MD native made three saves of her own in the period to protect St. Lawrence's 1-0 lead heading to the third.
Though Boston College rallied with two goals in the final 8:00 minutes of Thursday's game to earn a 3-3 tie, the Saints used a huge third period to put the game well out of reach. They scored three times while outshooting the Eagles 22-7 to put the final non-conference game of the season in the win column.
Fernandez picked up her first of the season at 7:32 of the period to put St. Lawrence ahead 2-0, with sophomore Alley Bero assisting on the goal. Senior captain Tara Akstull would follow at 14:45 with her 4th goal of the year that put the game out of reach. Emond earned her second helper on the game as the Saints took a 3-0 advantage.
Smith put the finishing touches on a five-point (2g, 3a) weekend in Massachusetts with an empty net, short-handed goal with 1:11 remaining in the game. The goal was unassisted and was Smith's 7th of the 2009-10 season.
Chartier was credited with the win having made six stops, though Weisz made 10 total saves in her stead. Kingston finished with 40 saves in a losing effort for the Eagles, who were held 0-for-2 on the power play to St. Lawrence's 1-for-5 mark.
St. Lawrence will complete a six-game road trip next weekend, January 22nd and 23rd, against Brown and Yale. Akstull enters the weekend only two points shy of becoming the 16th player in University history to record 100 career points, while Smith rides a four-game point scoring streak having totaled eight points in her last four contests.
