Emond, Smith Help Saints Tie Boston College

The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team earned a 3-3 tie against Hockey East foe Boston College on Thursday night in Chestnut Hill, MA.  The Saints were led by sophomore Vanessa Emond's two goals and senior assistant captain Britni Smith's three assists.

Finishing in a tie is nothing new for the Saints and Eagles, as the two teams have now combined for 15 ties already this season.  St. Lawrence is 9-7-6 on the year while Boston College moved to 5-8-9.

The non-conference game's scoring began midway through the first period when Boston College's Allie Thunstrom gave her team a 1-0 lead at 10:13.  She took a pass from Blake Bolden and scored on St. Lawrence netminder Maxie Weisz for her 12th of the season.

St. Lawrence would respond with a power play goal at 18:27 of the first to send the game into intermission knotted at 1-1.  First-year student Kayla Sullivan picked up her eighth goal of the year by beating Boston College's Corinne Boyles, with helpers going to Smith and rookie Michelle Ng.

The Saints, who outshot Boston College in each period on Thursday night, including an 11-7 advantage in the opening 20 minutes, scored the only goal of the second stanza while skating shorthanded.  Emond scored her first goal of the game at 10:40, with Smith again earning an assist to give St. Lawrence a 2-1 advantage heading into the third period.

Weisz, who had six saves in the first period, followed with two stops in the second before senior assistant captain Brittony Chartier relieved her midway through the frame.  Chartier made three saves in her stead.

Emond, who leads the Saints in scoring this season with 26 points, extended her team's cushion to 3-1 with her second goal of the game.  The Levis, QC native and Smith again connected for the goal at 5:26 of the third period.

Despite building the two-goal lead, Boyles play in net allowed the Eagles to rally and force the overtime session.  The goaltender made 11 stops in the third period, and Boston College pulled to within one at 3-2 when Caitlin Walsh scored at 13:18 with an assist going to Ashley Motherwell.  Mary Restuccia would then complete the Eagles' comeback effort by scoring the tying goal with only 55 seconds left in regulation.  Walsh assisted on the even strength goal which forced overtime with the game tied at 3-3.

St. Lawrence controlled the play in overtime, outshooting Boston College 4-1 in the extra session.  However, Boyles turned back each of the Saints' bids to end the game in a 3-3 tie.

Neither team was able to find success on the power play, as St. Lawrence finished 1-for-7 while the Eagles were 0-for-3.  The Saints also closed with a sound 35-22 advantage in shots on goal.  Boyles made 32 saves to earn the tie, while Chartier (11) and Weisz (8) combined for 19 stops.

The Saints and Eagles will be back in action again tomorrow, Friday, January 15 at 2:00pm in the second game of a two-game set.
