Saints Use Third-Period Rally to Nip Engineers

TROY, N.Y. -- The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team opened the 2010 calendar year in style, as they used a three-goal third period to erase a one-goal deficit en route to a 3-1 win against Rensselaer on Friday night at the Houston Field House.

The Saints improve to 8-7-5 overall and 5-3-2 in ECAC Hockey play with the come-from-behind win.  Meanwhile, Rensselaer falls to 7-9-4 (4-3-2) after seeing its 1-0 lead disappear early in the final stanza.

"I thought were able to get stronger as the game went on," remarked St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells, whose team moved into sixth place in the conference standings with the win.  "Brittony (Chartier) delivered some nice, clutch saves and we scored a pair of timely goals against a very tough team to play."

Despite outshooting the Engineers 10-3 in the opening 20:00 minutes, St. Lawrence was unable to solve RPI netminder Sonja van der Bliek, as she stopped each of the shots she faced.  Chartier was also perfect in the first period, but gave up the game's first goal at 11:45 of the second period.  Allison Wright picked up her seventh goal of the season, with assists going to Katie Daniels and Sierra Vadner as the home team held a 1-0 advantage heading into the third period.

First-year student Kayla Sullivan wasted little time in the third to knot the score at 1-1, tying the game only 1:34 into the final period.  The Caledonia, ON native pounced on her own rebound and beat van der Bliek for her seventh goal of the season.  Senior Karlee Shields and rookie Kelly Sabatine were credited with helpers on the tying goal.

Senior Michelle Zimmerman would keep the momentum in the Saints' corner with her third goal of the season only 3:11 later to give the visitors their first lead at 2-1.  The defenseman had a bit of good fortune, as she fired a shot from the right circle that bounced directly off of a Rensselaer skater and past the goalie for a 2-1 lead at 4:45 of the third period.

Chartier, who made nine important saves in the second period, turned in a perfect third to protect her team's narrow lead.  Sophomore Vanessa Emond put the game out of reach with an empty net goal with 16 seconds left in the contest to secure a 3-1 St. Lawrence victory.

Neither team was able to find success on the power play, as the Saints finished 0-for-4 while Rensselaer was 0-for-5.  Chartier picked up the win with a 17-save performance while van der Bliek suffered the loss despite making 23 saves.

St. Lawrence will look to earn a weekend sweep when it visits Union College tomorrow, Saturday, January 9th in Schenectady, NY.  The puck will drop on the Saints and Dutchwomen at 4:00pm.
