Princeton and Harvard Skate to Tie
PRINCETON -- Paula Romanchuk had two goals and an assist to lead the Princeton women's hockey team top a to a 3-3 tie with fifth-ranked Harvard on Friday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
Romanchuk and the Tigers jumped out early on the Crimson with goals on its first two shots. Harvard had the game's first six shots, but Princeton scored first at 5:27 when Romanchuk gained the puck in the neutral zone, skated into the Crimson end and scored from the top of the right circle.
Corey Stearns padded Princeton's lead three minutes later with a power-play tally as the Tigers used consecutive cross-ice passes to get the Crimson penalty killers moving side-to-side in the defensive zone. Sasha Sherry fed Romanchuk from the left point and to the right side and Riomanchuk sent the puck through the slot to Stearns on the left wing, who netted her third goal of the season.
Harvard trimmed the lead to a goal three minutes later when Anna McDonald scored from the top after peeling off the wall and taking a shot from between the circles.
Harvard evened the game four minutes into the second period when Kelsey Romatoski pinched in from the point and netted her first collegiate goal off a feed from Kate Buesser.
Romanchuk regained the lead for the Tigers with three minutes left in the period. After a faceoff win, Danielle DiCesare dropped the puck Stephanie Denino at the point for a shot. The initial shot was saved but Romanchuk got a piece of the rebound and knocked it over the goal line to give her teams a 3-2 edge.
Princeton held the lead until a Harvard power play late in the third period when Jillian Dempsey scored off a rush. Buesser and Leanna Coskren assisted on the goal.
Princeton goaltender Cassie Seguin made 22 saves in the tie while Laura Bellamy stopped 13 Princeton shots. Harvard outshot Princeton 25-16.
Princeton moved to 8-9-3 overall and 6-4-3 in the ECAC. The Tigers are back in action on Saturday at 3 p.m. against Dartmouth.
