Colgate Falls on Road to Niagara

NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. - The Colgate women's hockey team fell to non-conference opponent Niagara, 7-2, on Friday afternoon at Dwyer Arena in Niagara Falls, N.Y. The Raiders fall to 5-13-3 overall while the Purple Eagles improve to 8-7-4.  

After holding the Purple Eagles scoreless for almost the entire first period, Niagara managed to squeak in a goal during the final second of play to earn a 1-0 advantage heading into the second stanza. Niagara opened the second period with two quick goals in the first five minutes of action, putting the Purple Eagles up 3-0, with 15:10 left in the second.  

Freshman Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) was the first to score for the Raiders, tallying her first collegiate goal at 16:49 in the second period to cut Niagara's lead to two, 3-1. Classmates Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) and Jordan Brickner (Lake Forest, Ill.) each had an assist on the goal.    

Niagara opened the third period with a three-on-five power-play opportunity, scoring two goals in opening minutes to gain a 6-1 lead. Leah Whittaker, Daniela Dal Colle and Alison Malty led the Purple Eagles with one goal and one assist apiece.   The Raiders took advantage of their next power-play opportunity, one of just four th

roughout the game, scoring their second goal of the game at 11:38 in the final stanza. Senior Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) picked up her fifth goal of the season while Phillips collected her second assist of the game. Niagara would score once more in the final 57 seconds of action to earn the 7-2 victory.  

Colgate goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) finished the game with 17 saves in just over 41 minutes of play while Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made 8 stops in the final period. Niagara's Jenni Bauer tallied a team-high 33 saves in 56 minutes with Jill Zelonis and Amanda Rowe splitting the remaining time in net.  

The Raiders will return to the ice tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 9 for a rematch against the Purple Eagles. Start time is slated for 2 p.m. at Dwyer Arena.
