Cornell Skates Past Princeton
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Five different players scored a goal as the
Cornell women's hockey team earned a share of its first Ivy League
title since 1999 with a 6-0 victory over visiting Princeton on
Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. Chelsea Karpenko led the way with
a pair of goals for the Big Red on the afternoon.
Laura Fortino, Karlee Overguard, Lauriane Rougeau and Liz Zorn each
added a goal for the Big Red in the contest, while Amanda Mazzotta
stopped 21 shots for her second straight shutout. Cornell went
1-for-5 on the power play while holding Princeton scoreless in its
only power-play chance on the night.
Princeton goaltender Rachel Weber got the start and stopped 22 of
the 26 saves she faced, while Cassie Seguin came on in relief and
allowed two goals on eight shots.
Cornell got on the board with Fortino's goal midway through the
first period, a power-play tally that was assisted by Rougeau and
Catherine White. The period ended, 1-0, but Cornell would score
another two goals in the middle part of the second period. First,
Karpenko scored with Zorn picking up an assist, and then it was
Overguard scoring off assists from Melanie Jue and White.
The Big Red tacked on three more goals in the third to clinch the
victory. Karpenko scored two minutes into the period, picking up
the puck in front of the Cornell bench and skating in on a
breakaway, slotting the puck under Weber to make the score 4-0.
Rougeau and Zorn would add to the scoring in the period, with White
and Amber Overguard chipping in assists.
With the victory, Cornell is now 6-0-2 in Ivy League play and is
tied atop the league standings with Harvard, with both teams having
12 points. Cornell, however, has two games yet to play among league
foes, facing Brown and Yale next weekend on the road. Either a win
or a tie against either foe would give Cornell the outright league
title for the first time since 1999, the eighth sole championship
and the ninth overall.
In ECAC Hockey play, the Big Red is three points behind first-place
Clarkson, but four points clear of fifth place Quinnipiac and
Rensselaer, with the top four teams garnering hosting rights for
the first round of the ECAC Hockey playoffs, a feat that the Big
Red is seeking to do for the first time this season.
Cornell will travel to Brown and Yale for a pair of games next
weekend, opening up with a 7 p.m. contest at Brown on Friday before
facing the Bulldogs in a 4 p.m. contest on Saturday in New Haven,
Conn.
