Cornell Skates to Scoreless Tie with Quinnipiac
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's hockey team moved one step
closer to clinching its first ever top-four finish in ECAC Hockey
play on Friday night, skating to a scoreless tie against visiting
Quinnipiac at Lynah Rink. Cornell goaltender Amanda Mazzotta
stopped all 14 shots she faced in becoming Cornell's single-season
shutout leader with her seventh of the season.
Quinnipiac goaltender Victoria Vigilante was just as sharp, picking
up 37 saves on the night. Quinnipiac went 0-for-3 on the power play
on the night, while Cornell was scoreless in two extra-man
opportunities.
Despite the game finishing without either team finding the back of
the net, the two sides both had chances at breaking into the
scoring column. Quinnipiac's Brittany Lyons had a breakaway midway
through the second period, only to be stopped by a diving
poke-check from senior defenseman Kelly McGinty, knocking the puck
back to Mazzotta for an easy save.
Similarly, Cornell had a golden opportunity to score in the third
period when Chelsea Karpenko had a short-handed chance with just
over six minutes to play, but her shot was stopped by Vigilante
after the sophomore had gotten past the Bobcat defense.
Cornell now has a three-point lead over St. Lawrence, the
fifth-place team in the league standings, with five conference
contests to play. The Big Red could clinch a playoff birth on
Saturday when it takes on Princeton in a 4 p.m. contest at Lynah
Rink.
