Ryabkina Powers Crimson in Beanpot Opening Round
CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Junior Liza Ryabkina scored
the game-winning goal in the second period and added three more in
the third to lead the sixth-ranked Harvard women's hockey team to a
6-0 win over Boston College in the first round of the 2010 Women's
Beanpot, Tuesday at Bright Hockey Center.
Harvard improves to 13-5-4 on the season, capturing its third
consecutive win, while Boston College drops to 5-14-9 on the year.
With the win, the Crimson advances to the Beanpot championship game
for the third year in a row and will face the Northeastern Huskies,
who advanced by way of a 2-0 shootout win over Boston
University. Northeastern and BU played to a 4-4 after
regulation and a five-minute overtime, but the Huskies netted two
shootout goals sto advance.
Ryabkina finished the game with four goals, marking the first time
a Harvard player has had four tallies in a game since Sarah
Vaillancourt '08-09 potted four against Cornell, February 13, 2009.
In her first Beanpot contest, freshman goalie Laura Bellamy
recorded her second shutout of the season, stopping 15 shots on the
night. Josephine Pucci tallied the Crimson's other goal and Kate
Buesser and Anna McDonald recorded two assists each in the win. The
Crimson outshot the Eagles 51-15 on the evening and held a 40-25
edge in faceoffs.
Holding a 1-0 lead at the start of the third period, the Crimson
extended its lead on Ryabkina's second marker, with Buesser earning
the assist, with 11:20 to play in the game. Pucci's goal came off
assists from Buesser and Randi Griffin at the 10:38 mark. Ryabkina
capped off the hat trick by scoring her second power-play tally of
the game, coming less than a minute later off a McDonald helper at
11:16. Ryabkina completed her quartet of scores by picking off an
errant Eagle pass and burying an unassisted effort with 5:51
remaining in the game to give her the natural hat trick, lighting
the lamp three times in one period.
The Crimson outshot the Eagles by a 22-6 margin in the second
period, netting the game's first goal on a power play at 18:26.
Defender Kelsey Romatoski carried the puck at the right point and
made a pass into the slot, finding Anna McDonald. McDonald took a
quick shot on net and BC goaltender Corinne Boyles made the save,
but the puck bounced to her right, creating an open net opportunity
for Ryabkina. The junior batted the puck into the back of the net,
putting Harvard on top, 1-0. Through two periods of play, Harvard
enjoyed a 35-12 advantage in shots.
Harvard will welcome Ivy League and ECAC Hockey rivals Brown and
Yale to Bright Hockey Center Feb. 6-7.
