DiCesare Nets Winner as Tigers Blank Quinnipiac
PRINCETON -- Danielle DiCesare scored six minutes into the third period to lift the Princeton women's hockey team to a 1-0 win over Quinnipiac in an ECAC Hockey game on Saturday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink.
The teams played two scoreless periods before Princeton took advantage of a bad change by Quinnipiac to scored the go-ahead goal off the rush. Sasha Sherry made a cross-ice pass in front of her own bench to send play the other way. Her pass went to Melanie Wallace who chipped it ahead to Paula Romanchuk. Romanchuk and DiCesare then went into the Bobcat zone on a 2-on-1 and Romanchuk made the cross-ice pass to the slot where DiCesare deflected the pass into the top corner past Bobcat goaltender Victoria Vigilanti.
The first period was even one as Princeton and Quinnipiac both managed just five shots. In the second, play opened up and Princeton fired 12 shots on the Bobcat goal but couldn't crack Vigilanti. Quinnipiac had a long 5 on 3 in the period but DiCesare blocked two shots in the span as Princeton killed the long power play and the game remained even through two periods.
In the third period, Quinnipiac nearly took the lead four minutes in when Jordan Elkins point shot went through traffic and rang off the cross bar behind Princeton goalkeeper Cassie Seguin. The puck stayed out of the net and Princeton countered two minutes later with DiCesare's eighth goal of the season.
Seguin made 15 saves for the win and her third shutout while Vigilanti stopped 26 of the 27 shots she faced.
Princeton improved to 8-8-2 overall and 6-4-2 in the ECAC with the win and now sits third in the league standings after leaping over Quinnipiac. Princeton is back in action on Tuesday when Northeastern visits Baker Rink at 4 p.m.
