Dartmouth Drops First Game Against Connecticut
STORRS, Conn. - The Dartmouth women's hockey
team recovered from an early 2-0 deficit to tie the game in the
third period, but Connecticut never gave up its lead and defeated
the Big Green 3-2 in the first game of a two-game set.
Dartmouth (6-6-1) got goals from sophomore Erica
Dobos (Bethel Park, Pa.) and senior co-captain Sarah
Parsons (Dover, Mass.), with assists to senior Sarah
Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) and freshman Sasha
Nanji (Markham, Ont.). For Dobos, it was her first collegiate goal
and it came on the power play. Senior Mariel
Lacina made her third-straight start and took the loss, guiding 24
shots away from the net.
The Huskies (9-6-4) saw three different skaters score goals, while
Amy Hollstein and Monique Weber were the game's high scorers with
two points apiece. Hollstein had a goal and an assist, while Weber
had two helpers. Alexandra Garcia got the start in net and made 23
stops between the pipes.
Connecticut came out firing and scored as Casey Knajdek gave the
Huskies a 1-0 lead just 1:22 into the game with the assists going
to Cristin Allen and Jessica Lutz. Connecticut outshot the Big
Green 6-0 during the pressure and capitalized.
The Huskies didn't stop there in the first frame. Amy Hollstein
gave UConn a 2-0 lead with 36 seconds remaining with the assist
awarded to Monique Weber. Connecticut dominated in the shots
department with a 16-6 advantage. Dartmouth was awarded with the
only power play of the period and failed to put the puck in the
net.
Dartmouth got back into the game 2:12 into the second period. Dobos
scored her first collegiate goal on the power play with the assists
going to Toupal and Nanji. Nanji now has scored a point in seven of
her last nine games.
The Big Green got back into the game thanks to an 11-5 advantage in
shots in the second frame. Dartmouth also had four opportunities on
the power play and ended up with only one goal.
Parsons evened the score for the Big Green at 2-2, 21 seconds into
the third period. Her team-leading ninth goal of the season came
unassisted. The 2-2 tie didn't last long as Michelle Binning put
the Huskies back on top at 3-2 with the game-winner coming two
minutes after the Parsons goal. Weber added her second point of the
afternoon with another assist and
Dartmouth outshot Connecticut in two of the three periods, but the
Huskies won the over battle, outshooting the Big Green, 27-25.
Dartmouth had five opportunities on the power play and was able to
score once. The Big Green did a great job staying out of the box as
UConn only had two chances with the extra skater and failed to
score both times.
The two schools will hit the ice again tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
