Raiders Upset No. 10 Syracuse
SYRACUSE, N.Y. - Rookie Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.)
scored the game-winning goal with just 10.2 seconds left in
overtime to give the Raiders a 5-4 victory against tenth-ranked
Syracuse on Saturday evening at the Tennity Ice Pavilion in
Syracuse, N.Y.
Colgate fought back from a 4-1 deficit after the first period to
remain undefeated in its all-time series against the Orange.
Phillips added three more points on top of the game-winner,
including the first goal of the game and two assists, one on the
game-tying goal. The Orange opened the game with
two quick goals in the first five minutes of play. Syracuse
picked up one more goal before Phillips put the Raiders
on the board, to make it a 3-1 game. Sophomore Heidi Peterson
(Hastings, Minn.) picked up her second assist of the season
on the Colgate goal. The Orange closed the opening session
with a final power-play goal, which would be their last of the
game.
The Raiders mounted their comeback in the second period, taking
advantage of a power-play opportunity to cut the Syracuse lead in
half, 4-2. Senior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) sent a hard
pass toward the net where classmate Evan Minnick (Highlands Ranch,
Colo.) tipped the puck in past Orange goaltender Lucy Schoedel.
Colgate earned another power-play goal at 8:14 in the third period
as Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) made it a 4-3 game just
seven seconds into the extra man advantage. After a flurry in front
of the Syracuse net, senior Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.)
earned the game-tying goal with just 14.5 seconds left on the clock
to send the game into an overtime session.
Sophomore goaltender Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) stopped a
breakaway opportunity by Syracuse in overtime and the Colgate
defense blocked a rebound shot to stay in the game. With time
running down on the overtime clock, Hannah Milan (Great Barrington,
Mass.) sent a pass up the ice from the blue line where Phillips was
able to get just in front of two Orange defenders. Phillips sent
the puck over Schoedel with 10.2 seconds left on the clock to earn
the overtime victory.
Sass finished with 32 saves for Colgate while Schoedel had 31. The
Raiders went 3-10 on the power-play while Syracuse finished 3-9.
Colgate will be back in action this weekend when they take
on Niagara on Jan. 8-9 in Niagara Falls, N.Y. Game time is slated
for 2 p.m. both days.
