Gentile Gives Union Win Over North Dakota
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Junior forward and captain Marissa Gentile (Groton, Mass.) scored the go-ahead goal as the Union College women's ice hockey team open 2010 with a 3-1 win over the University of North Dakota on New Year's Day.
Union picked up its second win in three games and is now 4-11-3 overall while North Dakota moves to 4-14-1. Freshman goaltender Alana Marcinko (Altoona, Pa.) earned her second career win.
As the second period was approaching toward the end, Union took a 2-1 lead when Gentile took a shot just outside the neutral zone to slip pass goaltender Brittany Kirkham to deliver her first power play goal on the season.
Midway through the third period, Union extended its lead when sophomore defenseman Chelsey Heinhuis (Chatham, Ont.) took a shot that rocketed toward the crossbar and into the net.
North Dakota played six-on-four with less than three minutes left in the game. The Fighting Sioux took nine shots during the penalty but were all stopped by Marcinko and the Dutchwomen defense.
North Dakota outshot Union 35-20. Ashley Furia got the game started seven minutes into the game when she responded a cross and taps the puck by Marcinko.
Freshman forward Jeannie Sabourin (Westlock, Alb.) tied the game at one after taking a shot just outside the goal crease.
Union will play North Dakota one more time on Saturday in the final non-conference game on the season. Faceoff is at 4 p.m.
