Big Green Skates to Tie with Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Despite a hat trick from
senior co-captain Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat Alta.) and a
three-goal lead, the Dartmouth women's hockey team had to settle
for a 5-5 tie with Colgate on Saturday afternoon.
The Big Green (0-1-1, 0-1-1 ECAC) got three power play goals from
Cunningham and two even strength scores and an assist from junior
Amanda
Trunzo (Andover, Minn.). Also contributing in the tie was senior
co-captain Sarah
Parsons (Dover, Mass.) and sophomore Kelly
Foley (Boston, Mass.) as both had three assists. Freshman Whitney
Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) got the start in net and made 29 saves in
her collegiate debut.
The Raiders (1-6-1, 0-1-1 ECAC) saw Evan Minnick get two goals,
while Katie Stewart posted a goal and an assist in the tie. Ali
Edell and Jordan Brickner also had good days with a pair of assists
apiece. In net, Kimberly Sass made 31 stops between the pipes.
Dartmouth didn't let its power play problems carry into the second
game of the season as Cunningham tallied her first goal of the
season coming on the Big Green's first extra-man opportunity of the
game. Foley and Parsons connected on the assists.
It was Cunningham again on the power play to give Dartmouth a 2-0
lead late in the opening period. Foley assisted on the
second-straight power play goal and junior Amanda
Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) converted on the play as well.
Each team got two chances on the man advantage. The Big Green
scored on both, while Colgate failed in its two opportunities.
Dartmouth also had a 12-8 advantage in shots.
Trunzo increased the lead to 3-0 with her first of the season
coming even strength with 11:28 left in the second period. Parsons
was credited with her second assist of the night.
Colgate got on the board and cut the lead to 3-1 late in the second
frame on a goal by Evan Minnick, coming with 2:37 left in the
period. Cunningham and the Big Green fired back a minute later on
the power play to push the lead back up to three goals at 4-1. She
posted three goals in a game for the third time in her career.
Foley was given her third assist of the game on the play and
freshman Camille
Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) earned her first collegiate point with
an assist.
It didn't take long for Colgate to get to within two goals again as
Brittany Phillips scored on the power play with 53 seconds left in
the period. Assists went to Jordan Brickner and Ali Edell.
Dartmouth once again had the shot advantage in the period at 12-10
and both teams capitalized on extra skater chances. The Raiders
earned four power play opportunities to two for the Big Green.
In the third period, Colgate would not go away as the Raiders got
back to within one goal with an even strength tally from Beth
Rotenberg 2:21 into the final frame. The assist was given to Jessi
Waters and Colgate was on the verge of erasing a three-goal
deficit.
The Raiders evened the score on a power play goal by Katie Stewart
with 6:19 left in the game. The goal came unassisted and just like
last night against Cornell, the Big Green kept committing penalties
to give Colgate the chances to get back in the game.
Trunzo put Dartmouth back on top with her second goal of the game
to make it 5-4. The score came with just over three minutes
remaining and the assist came from Parsons, which was her third
helper of the game.
Colgate continued to fight back and the Raiders tied the score
again with Minnick's second of the game. The goal came at the 1:55
mark of the final period and the assists went to Stewart and
Marissa Dombovy.
The Big Green tallied three power play goals in eight chances,
while the Raiders score twice with the extra skater in nine
opportunities. Dartmouth had a slim advantage in shots at
36-34.
The Big Green will look for its first win of the season, but it
will not be easy as seventh-ranked St. Lawrence stops in Hanover
for a 7 p.m. start next Friday night for the home opener.
