Big Red Caps Historic Weekend with Win Over Harvard
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Melanie Jue and Chelsea Karpenko both had a pair
of goals as the Cornell women's hockey team knocked off its second
straight ranked opponent with a 4-3 victory over #9 Harvard on
Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. The win gives the Big Red its
first ever weekend sweep against Dartmouth and Harvard after
Cornell's 3-0 victory against Dartmouth on Friday.
Jue scored the game-winner with 3:03 to play, while Catherine White
had had a three-point day with a trio of assists. Laurianne
Rougeau, Amanda Young, Kelly McGinty and Liz Zorn each added an
assist, while Amanda Mazzotta picked up 16 saves for her second win
of the season.
For Harvard, Katharine Chute had a goal and two assists, while Anna
McDonald and Jillian Dempsey added goals. Kathryn Farni had a pair
of assists, with McDonald and Kaitlin Spurling tallying a single
assist. Christina Kessler stopped 22 shots for the loss for the
Crimson.
Karpenko's second goal came on the power play as Cornell finished
the day 1-for-3 with the man advantage. Harvard went 1-for-5 on the
power play on the day, with Dempsey's tally coming on the power
play.
Karpenko got the Big Red on the board first with a goal in the
first period, but Harvard rallied in the second period to score a
pair and take a 2-1 lead, with the second Crimson goal coming with
1:37 to play in the period. Jue came to the rescue, knotting the
score just 45 seconds later to send the game to the third tied at
two.
In the third, Karpenko scored just 2:55 into the period, making a
nice move to fake out Kessler and slide the puck into the goal to
Kessler's right. Harvard would tie the score 10 minutes later on
Chute's tally, but Jue's wrist shot from the slot gave beat Kessler
and sent the Big Red to the victory.
Cornell returns to action on Friday, traveling to Union for a 3
p.m. matchup in Schenectady, N.Y.
