Clarkson's Streak Continues
Potsdam, NY - Averaging nearly four goals per
game entering Friday's contest, the Clarkson University Women's
Hockey team struggled to figure out Brown University goaltender
Katie Jamieson. However, a late goal from sophomore Katelyn Ptolemy
(Dinsmore, SASK) helped the third-ranked Golden Knights solve the
freshman, surviving a scare from the Bears with a 1-0 victory in
front of 243 fans at Cheel Arena.
The Golden Knights improved to 8-1-1 on the season and 2-0-0 in
ECAC Hockey, while the Bears fell to 1-2-0 and 0-1-0. Clarkson will
face Yale University at 2:00 pm on Saturday afternoon while Brown
travels down the road to face St. Lawrence in Canton, NY.
Friday afternoon's first period was uneventful as both teams
struggled to click offensively, even with power-play opportunities.
Clarkson out shot Brown, 8-2, in the frame, and the Bears enjoyed
two chances with the man-advantage, but were unable to get many
quality chances. Only one of Brown's two shots came on the power
play, which was one more than Clarkson achieved on its extra-player
chance. It was only the second time through 10 games in 2009 that
the Golden Knights were held scoreless in the first period.
In the second, both teams maintained the scoreless tie, though
Clarkson was finally able to put a little pressure on during its
power play chances, tossing six shots on goal during its extra-play
opportunities. The Knights held a 10-2 lead in shots in the period,
pushing their advantage to 18-4 for the game.
Though the Knights continued to pepper Brown goaltender Katie
Jamieson, it appeared as if Clarkson was headed to its first ever
scoreless tie. However, with both teams down a player and skating
four-on-four, sophomore defenseman Katelyn Ptolemy blasted a shot
from near the blue line that ricocheted off a Brown defender's leg
and into the back of the net with just 7:05 remaining in the game.
The goal was Ptolemy's first of the season, and the first of her
career. Classmate Kali Gillanders (Kyle, SASK) picked up her third
assist of the season.
Lauren Dahm (Baldwinsville, NY) made nine saves for her third
shutout of the season and the 13th of her career. Jamieson played
well in net for Brown, making numerous key saves, especially in the
third period. She finished with 33 saves as Clarkson out shot Brown
34-9.
The Knights finished 0-for-7 on the power play, while Brown was
held scoreless in four extra-skater chances.
