BURLINGTON, Vt. -  The Dartmouth women's hockey team scored four goals in the opening frame, including two from senior co-captain Sarah Parsons (Dover, Mass.), but the 4-3 win didn't come easy on Saturday night at Gutterson Fieldhouse.

Dartmouth (5-4-1) got two goals from Parsons with one coming on the power play, while junior Amanda Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) tallied two points with a goal and an assist. Freshman Camille Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) had a good night with two assists and senior co-captain Jenna Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) netted her seventh of the season. Freshman Whitney Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) got the start in net and made 16 saves in her second career win.

For the Catamounts (5-8-1), Celeste Doucet and Chelsea Furlani each earned two points with a goal and an assist. Erin Barley-Maloney tallied a goal, with assists going to four different skaters. Kristen Olychuck took the loss in net, pushing aside 20 shots. 

Dartmouth took a 1-0 lead with 16:07 remaining in the first frame with Parsons tallying her 50th career goal. She broke into the Vermont zone on a pass from freshman Margaux Sharp (Carleton Place, Ont.) and beat the Catamount netminder with the backhand between the pads. For Sharp, it was her first collegiate point and junior Larissa Roche (Thorhild, Atla.) also assisted on the play for her second of the season.

Vermont evened the score three minutes later as Furlani took a shot from the right circle that fluttered over the glove of Woodcox for the score. The shot took some skill as it looked to be on its side after a defender stopped the initial pass.

Parsons struck again with 4:28 left in the first period with a power play goal. It only took the Big Green 32 seconds into the extra skater advantage to take the lead back at 2-1. Parsons fired a wrister from the top of the left circle that found its way through traffic and into the back of the net.
 
Dartmouth increased the lead to 3-1 just 21 seconds later as Trunzo added her seventh of the year on a rebound. Freshman Sasha Nanji (Markham, Ont.) put a shot on net from the point, Olychuck couldn't cover the puck and Trunzo was there for the clean-up. Dumais also assisted on the play for one of two helpers in the first.

The Big Green domination continued on the power play as Cunningham stuffed home another rebound left by Olychuck. Trunzo came off the bench and connected on a slap shot that was tipped by sophomore Kelly Foley (Boston, Mass.) in front. Olychuck made the save but Cunningham slipped the puck just inside the left post for the 4-1 lead with less than a minute left in the opening frame.

Dartmouth didn't help itself early in the second period after taking back-to-back penalties in the first three minutes of play. Vermont, however, failed to get a shot on net on the 5-on-3 advantage.

Vermont cut the lead to 4-2 with 4:08 remaining in the second. Barley-Maloney gave the Catamounts their second goal of the night. Doucet put a shot on Woodcox, the puck popped up in the air and off the mask of the Darmouth netminder. From there, somehow Barley-Maloney found the puck in a scrum as two Big Green skaters crashed to the ice and she ended up beating Woodcox for the goal.

The third period was littered by Big Green penalties and it came back to bite Dartmouth in the final minutes. Vermont pulled the goalie on a 5-on-3 advantage to make it 6-on-3 and no more than 10 seconds into the power play, the Catamounts made it 4-3 on a goal by Doucet. She was able to collect a rebound in front and beat Woodcox to the near post to make it interesting. However, in the end, the Big Green was able to pull it out.

Overall Dartmouth won the shot battle, 24-19, and was 2-for-5 on the power play. Vermont definitely had multiple opportunities to tie the game in the final period and had eight chances with the extra skater. Five of those opportunities came in the third.

The Big Green will take a much-needed couple of weeks off before returning to Thompson Arena on Dec. 12 to face Granite State rival New Hampshire at 7 p.m. in Hanover.
