Raiders Drop Second Game to Mercyhurst
ERIE, Pa. (11/28/09) - The Colgate
women's hockey team dropped their second game of the weekend
against Mercyhurst College, 8-2, this afternoon at the Mercyhurst
Ice Center in Erie, Pa. The Lakers, which have been ranked No.
1 for the last eight weeks, improve their overall record to 12-1-1,
while the Raiders fall to 3-11-3 overall.
The Lakers tallied four goals in the first period and added two
more in the second to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. Vicki
Bendus had two goals and two assists to lead Mercyhurst in scoring
for the day.
Rookie Jordan Brickner (Lake Forest, Ill.) was the first to score
for the Raiders, lighting the lamp at 17:44 to close out the second
period. Sophomore Amanda Kirwan (Mississauga, Ont.) assisted
on the power-play goal which cut the Lakers lead 6-1.
Mercyhurst would score twice more to open up the third period
before the Raiders' Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) picked up her
ninth goal of the season. The Colgate senior has scored at least
one goal in the last four games for the Raiders. Stewart's
goal, which was the last of the evening, came at 5:03 in the final
stanza, with an assist from freshman Jenna Klystra (Edmonton,
Alta.).
The Lakers took advantage of their power-play opportunities, going
3-5 when given the advantage. Colgate went 1-7 on power-play
chances.
Junior Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) finished with 26 saves in the
Colgate loss, while Hillary Pattenden and Stephanie Ciampa again
split time between the posts for the Lakers. Pattenden had 15 stops
for Mercyhurst while Ciampa picked up seven.
The Raiders will resume ECAC play next weekend when they host both
Brown and Yale at Starr Rink. Colgate will face Brown on Dec.
4 at 7 p.m. and Yale on Dec. 5 at 4 p.m.
