Tigers Handle BU
PRINCETON -- The Princeton women's hockey team used a pair of first period power-play goals to build an early lead in a 3-1 win over eighth-ranked Boston University on Friday afternoon at Hobey Baker Rink. Junior Laura Martindale had a goal and an assist in the win.
Princeton was the better team in the first period and kept much of the play in the Terrier zone. The Tigers drew four power plays in the stanza and converted on their first, just pass the halfway mark of the period.
With possession established in the offensive zone, Martindale fed the puck to sophomore Paula Romanchuk from the right point to the circle in front. Romanchuk took the initial shot, which Terrier goaltender Melissa Haber stopped, but the rebound came to the right side where sophomore Danielle DiCesare backhanded it into the open net for her team-leading sixth goal of the season.
Princeton made the score 2-0 later in the period converting on a 5-on-3 seconds after the fourth BU penalty of the period was called. Sophomore Heather Landry, taking her only face-off of the night after Romanchuk was tossed from the draw, won the face-off back to junior Sasha Sherry who moved to the middle of the blueline and rifled a shot to the top right corner of the net for her third goal of the season.
Play turned in BU's favor in the second period as the Terriers outshot Princeton 12-5 after Princeton held a 17-6 edge in shots in the first period. BU broke through with a goal late in the period as Jenelle Kohanchuk caused a turnover just in front of the Princeton crease and scored her 11th goal of the season.
Princeton regained control of the play in the final stanza, outshooting Boston University 12-4 and holding BU shotless for the first 14 minutes of the period. Martindale added the final goal unassisted into the empty net with nine seconds remaining.
Tiger sophomore goaltender Rachel Weber stopped 21 of the 22 shots she faced for her fourth win of the season, while Haber made 31 saves in the loss. Princeton improved to 7-3-1 overall while the Terriers dropped to 6-5-6. The two teams conclude their series Saturday at 4 p.m.
