Dutchwomen Rally Falls Short

Boxscore

SCHENECTADY, NY - Sophomore forward Emilie Arseneault scored for the Union women's hockey team in its 3-1 setback against the Bluewater Junior Hawks in exhibition play Sunday at Messa Rink. The warm-up game comes less than a week before Union starts the 2009-10 season at Northeastern on Saturday, Oct. 3 at 2 p.m.

Arseneault, who finished second on the team with six goals last year, put Union on the board 6:01 into the third period on a pass from sophomore Molly Kate Devin.

The Dutchwomen found themselves trailing 3-0 after two periods, but Arseneault's tally shifted momentum in the home-team's favor. Union outshot Bluewater 13-4 in the third period and had its best opportunity during a two-man advantage with less than six minutes remaining in the game.

Bluewater got a pair of goals from Taylor Day at 16:50 of the first and 7:39 of the second. Ally Tarr assisted on both goals, while Carly Mercer had the primary assist on the second tally.   Sophomore Kate Gallagher got the start between the pipes in goal, stopping 11 shots in 31:24 of action. Freshman Alana Marcinko took over near the midway point of the second and she tuned away four tries.

Bluewater's Danielle Butters and Lisa Steffes shared time as well. Butters made 14 saves, while Steffers had 16 stops.

Next time Union will play on home ice will be on Friday, Oct. 16 when Sacred Heart visists for a 7 p.m. start.
