Bears Shock Providence to Take Mayor's Cup

Brown took an exciting 4-1 win in the 2009 edition of the Mayor's Cup rivalry against crosstown foe Providence College, riding impressive goaltending and an opportunistic offense to the victory. Rookie goalie Katie Jamieson had 29 saves, including 18 in the first period, while senior Erin Connors scored a pair of goals in the third period to seal the victory.

The opening frame was all Providence, as the Friars outshot Brown by a 19-7 margin. However, only one of their shots found the back of the net in the frame, as Jamieson made 18 saves, including eight in the first seven minutes. After the first intermission, it was the Bears who came out firing, as freshman Kelly Griffin just missed a goal less than 30 seconds into the frame. Griffin's shot appeared to find the net before bouncing back out, but was ruled to have hit the pipe by the officials.

Bruno wasted little time dwelling on their missed opportunity, however, as rookie Erica Farrer notched her first career point with a goal at the 1:09 mark. After a fast break up the ice, Farrer finished with an impressive shot into the upper corner, tying the game at one apiece. With the score, Brown seemed to find its footing, holding even with the Friars for the remainder of the period, and going into the locker rooms with the score still tied.

With the outcome of the game very much undecided as the third period started, Connors stepped up with some instant offense. Just under three minutes into the frame, Connors and fellow senior Nicole Brown worked a 2-on-1 opportunity perfectly, passing down the ice until Connors knocked it into the back of the net to give Brown its first lead of the game with what would go on to be the game winning goal. She struck again just over five minutes later, firing another one into goal for a 3-1 advantage, as Brown's offense truly found its rhythm.

The remainder of the period saw personal highlights for the Bears, as a pair of freshmen forwards notched their first career collegiate goals. First, rookie Laurie Jolin took a pass from junior Jenna Dancewicz and fired it in from the right side of the net. Alena Polenska, who was credited with an assist on Jolin's goal, then picked up a loose puck in the Providence College zone and fired it back into goal for a 5-1 lead. From there, the Bears were able to hold on to the win and bring the Mayor's Cup back to College Hill.

The Bears will be back in action on Friday, October 30, when they travel to upstate New York to take on the Clarkson Golden Knights at 7:00 p.m.
