Raiders Edge Orange
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Senior Katie Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) led the
Raiders to a 5-4 victory against regional rival Syracuse University
in a non-conference game at Starr Rink on Tuesday evening.
Stewart tallied a goal and two assists for the Raiders, who
improve to 2-9-3 overall. The Orange drop to 6-6-1 so far this
season.
Senior captain Ali Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) put the Raiders on
the board with her second goal of the season coming just six
minutes into the first period. Stewart, who had the initial
shot on goal, was credited with an assist along with Evan Minnick
(Highlands Ranch, Colo.). Minnick followed with a goal of her own
less than two minutes later to give Colgate an early 2-0 advantage
against the visiting Orange.
Syracuse lit the lamp for the first time on the power-play a few
minutes later, but the Raiders closed out the period with one final
goal putting them back on top by two. Stewart put in Colgate's
third goal with just 42 seconds left in the opening period, aided
by Jenna Klynstra (Edmonton, Alta.) and Jessi Waters (Menlo Park,
Calif.). The Orange would cut the Raiders lead to 3-2 in the
second period. Megan Skelly scored the lone goal of the
session, unassisted at 5:55.
The two teams combined for another four goals before the close of
the third period. Colgate was again the first to score, as
Jordan Brickner (Lake Forest, Ill.) put in a deflected shot taken
by Beth Rotenberg (Toronto, Ont.) in the first 16 seconds of the
period. The Orange responded with another power-play goal but
the Raiders still held onto the lead, 4-3.
Senior Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.) scored the game-winning
goal for the Raiders, receiving the puck from Klynstra and sailing
it high over the goaltenders left shoulder and into the back of the
net. Syracuse would add one final goal in the closing minutes,
but Colgate held them off for the 5-4 victory.
Colgate goalie Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) had 20 saves in the
win, while Syracuse goaltender Lucy Schoedel finished with 33
stops.
The Raiders went 1-4 on the power-play and outshot the Orange
38-24. Syracuse finished 2-4 on power-play
opportunities.
Colgate will be back in action this weekend as they take on
top-ranked Mercyhurst College Friday, Nov. 27 and Saturday, Nov.
28, in Erie, Pa.
