Late Rally Falls Short for Tigers
BURLINGTON, Vt. -- A third period rally was not enough as the Princeton women's hockey team could not overcome a three-goal deficit in a 4-3 loss at Vermont on Friday evening at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Princeton fell behind in the second period as Vermont scored three consecutive goals to turn a 1-1 tie to a 4-1 lead. Chelsea Furlani scored on the power play 1:08 into the period to make it 2-1 and Maggie Walsh and Brittany Nelson built the lead to 4-1.
Princeton attempted to rally in the third period and got back within a goal as it outshot Vermont 11-3 over the final 20 minutes but was only able to find the back of the net twice.
Sophomore Julie Johnson scored at 5:44 of the period to make the score 4-2 and classmate Danielle DiCesare scored on the power play at 12:02 to get Princeton back within a goal. That however was as close as the Tigers would get in the game as Vermont held on for the 4-3 win.
Johnson finished the game with a goal and two assists as she had helpers on senior Melanie Wallace's first period goal and DiCesare's in the third. Wallace had the lone assist on Johnson's goal.
Princeton outshot Vermont 24-18 in the loss. Freshman Cassie Seguin took the los allowing four goals on 11 shots, while sophomore Rachel Weber stopped the three shots she faced in relief.
Princeton falls to 0-1 and will look to bounce back tomorrow afternoon when the series concludes at 4 p.m.
