Dartmouth Skates Past McGill
HANOVER, N.H. - The Dartmouth women's hockey
team got two goals and an assist from junior Amanda
Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) as the Big Green defeated McGill
University, 4-2, in an exhibition game on Friday afternoon.
Dartmouth opened the scoring 2:35 into the first period on the
power play as senior co-captain Jenna
Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) found the back of the net with the
assists going to Trunzo and senior co-captain Sarah
Parsons (Dover, Mass.).
The Big Green increased the lead to 2-0 late into the period with
Parsons netting her first goal. She got a rebound off of a Jenna
Hobeika (Alpine, N.J.) shot and hooked it around the goaltender as
she was falling to the ice. Also assisting on the goal was Foley
with her second of the game.
McGill got back to within a goal at 2-1 with 2:43 left in the
period. Kim Ton-That connected with Jordanna Peroff and she beat
senior goaltender Mariel
Lacina (London, Ont.) between the pads to cut the lead in half.
The Martlets evened the score at 2-2, 3:40 into the second period.
Victoria Wells connected with her sister Alexandra and Victoria
beat Lacina to the far post to tie the score, while falling to the
ice. Dartmouth went back on top two minutes later as top-liners
Parsons and Trunzo hooked up for the score to make it 3-2. Parsons
broke into the zone and found a wide open Trunzo at the far post
and she hit the open net.
The final goal of the game came late in the last period as Trunzo
netted her second of the night with an empty net goal with 39
seconds remaining to give Dartmouth the 4-2 win.
The Big Green went 1-for-4 on the power play, while McGill was held
scoreless on four opportunities with the extra skater. Dartmouth
fired at will on net with 40 shots to 15 by the Martlets.
Lacina got the start in net and made eight saves in 32 minutes and
freshman Whitney
Woodcox (Oshawa, Ont.) saw her first action, pushing aside five
shots in the win.
Dartmouth opens its 2009-10 regular season next weekend as the Big
Green heads south for a weekend of games against Cornell and
Colgate. Dartmouth plays Cornell at 3 p.m. on Friday, followed by
another early game at Colgate at 3 p.m.
