Third-Period Goal Lifts Tigers
PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Danielle DiCesare scored the game-winning goal at 4:53 of the third period to give the Princeton women's hockey team a 3-2 victory over Colgate on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Baker Rink.
One second after Princeton returned to full strength following a tripping penalty, DiCesare put the puck away, after connecting with sophomore Paula Romanchuk and senior captain Stephanie Denino. Prior to the goal, the Tigers had a solid power play with six shots, three of which were on goal.
The teams traded goals in both the first and second periods, with Princeton's Melanie Wallace finding the back of the net first.
Freshman Corey Stearns had a shot wide that went over the right shoulder of goaltender Lisa Plenderleith and into the corner. Sophomore Charissa Stadnyk won the puck off the boards and fed Wallace in front of the goal, who put it in on the right side at 6:57.
The Raiders tied it less than four minutes later. Brittany Phillips won a draw deep in the Princeton zone and sent the puck back to Hannah Milan at the top of the right circle. Milan delivered a great pass to the front of the net to a waiting Amanda Kirwan, who slipped the puck in glove side on freshman netminder Cassie Sequin.
Twenty-one seconds into a Colgate power-play, Princeton forced the Raiders into a turnover and Romanchuk and Stearns got a 2-on-1 break. Stearns passed off to Romanchuk on the left side and she put away the short-handed tally to make it 2-1 at 17:23.
The lead would be short lived however, when Princeton scored on that same power play. Katie Stewart had a shot saved by Sequin and stuffed in her own rebound at 18:45.
Colgate pulled Plenderleith with 1:14 to play in favor of the extra attacker and had four shots, two stopped by Sequin.
Sequin finished the night with 22 saves, earning her third career win. Plenderleith stopped 25 saves in the losing effort.
Princeton was 0-for-4 on the power play while Colgate was 1-for-2.
The Tigers improve to 6-3-1 overall and 5-2-1 in ECAC Hockey action, while the Raiders fall to 2-9-3 overall and 1-4-3 in league play.
Princeton hosts Boston University in a pair of games next weekend, Nov. 27 and 28. Both games are set to begin at 4 p.m.
