Saints Edged on the Road
The St. Lawrence University women's hockey team suffered a non-conference loss to the Ohio State University on Friday night in Columbus, OH, as the Buckeyes reeled off three goals in the third period to hand the Scarlet and Brown a 4-3 defeat.
The win moves Ohio State, out of the WCHA conference, to 6-6-3 (5-6-1) on the season, while St. Lawrence falls to 5-5-4 (3-3-1).
"I thought we played a pretty solid game in a difficult building to succeed in," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "(Ohio State) is a very good transition team and we had a tough time trying to shut down (Natalie) Spooner. We are looking forward to getting ‘back up on the horse' tomorrow."
Spooner, a stand-out forward that scored three goals in last season's series with St. Lawrence, was a member of Team Canada's 2008 Four Nations Cup team. She went for a goal and two assists on Friday night, while teammate Melissa Feste scored twice and added a helper.
The Buckeyes didn't take long to open the scoring, as rookie standout Hokey Langan scored her 10th goal of the 2009-10 season on St. Lawrence senior goalie Maxie Weisz only 52 seconds into regulation. Spooner picked up one of her two assists on the opening goal, as Langan continued to add to her lead in the national rankings for points amongst rookies (23).
The Saints' corps of young talent helped the visitors build a 2-1 lead in the second period. Sophomore Alley Bero picked up her third goal of the season at 8:08 of the first period to send the game to intermission tied at 1-1. Senior assistant captain Courtney Sawchuk assisted on the goal. First-year student Michelle Ng then gave St. Lawrence a 2-1 cushion at 14:56, as she beat Ohio State netminder Deidre Facklis. Helpers went to sophomore Vanessa Emond and senior captain Tara Akstull on Ng's fourth goal of the season which gave her team a 2-1 lead after 40:00 minutes.
Unfortunately for St. Lawrence, Feste owned the opening half of the third period as she scored her 5th and 6th goals of the season to put Ohio State on top 3-2. She evened the game at 2-2 at 6:25, with Spooner assisting, then gave the Buckeyes back the lead at 3-2 only 3:06 later, with an assist going to Minttu Tuominen.
A trio of St. Lawrence rookies would help their team's cause, as they combined to tie the score again at 3-3 at 11:15 of the third period. First-year student Jamie Goldsmith scored the game's lone power play goal, with helpers going to classmates Kayla Sullivan and Kelly Sabatine to knot the score for the third time.
Spooner proved to be the difference-maker in the later stages of the stanza, however, and delivered a clutch goal on Weisz with only 5:22 remaining in the game. The sophomore's 9th goal of the season, which was assisted by Feste and Kelly Wild, would prove to stand up as the game-winner as Ohio State escaped with a 4-3 win despite being outshot by the Saints, 30-18.
Facklis earned the win with 27 saves, including a game-high 11 in the first period, while Weisz suffered the loss after making 14 stops. St. Lawrence finished 1-of-2 on the power play while Ohio State was 0-for-1.
The two teams will meet again tomorrow, Saturday, November 21 at the OSU Ice Rink to complete the weekend series. The puck is set to drop on the Saints and Buckeyes at 4:07pm.
