Cornell Opens with Exhibition Tie
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Karlee Overguard's extra-attacker goal with 24
seconds left in regulation gave the Cornell women's hockey team a
5-5 tie with the Toronto Aeros on Sunday afternoon at Lynah Rink.
Catherine White scored two goals and had an assist to lead the Big
Red offense on the day.
Cornell took a 2-0 lead after the first period following goals from
White and Laura Danforth. Toronto cut into that lead early in the
second period, scoring a power-play tally by Erin Ambrose, but the
Big Red put the lead back up to two goals with White's second goal
of the day at the 13:58 mark of the second period.
In a wild third period, the Aeros cut into the Cornell lead when
Gillian Beggs scored 4:18 into the period. Chelsea Karpenko scored
a power-play goal just over two minutes later to make the score
4-2, but the Aeros would strike for three straight goals, taking
the lead on Kelly Babstock's goal with 2:55 to play in the third
period.
With 45 seconds left, Cornell goalkeeper Katie Wilson came to the
bench for the extra skater, and just over 20 seconds later,
Overguard knotted the score at five after following up a rebound
from Hayley Hughes' shot. Cornell got six shots on goal in the
overtime, compared to one for Toronto, but neither side could put
home the game-winner.
Cornell goaltender Amanda Mazzotta started and picked up a total of
10 saves on 11 shots, while Wilson picked up eight saves and
allowed four goals. For Toronto, Brianna Piper made 14 saves on 16
shots, while Nicole Paniccia made 20 saves on 23 shots.
Cornell will open up the regular season on Friday when it plays
host to Mercyhurst in a 3 p.m. contest at Lynah Rink.
