Dutchwomen Complete Home Sweep

Boxscore

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Sophomore forward Émilie Arseneault (Rothesay, N.B.) scored the go ahead goal in the second period as Union defeated Sacred Heart 3-1 Saturday evening. The Dutchwomen are now 2-0 at home.

After a scoreless first period, the Dutchwomen started the second period on penalty kill when two Union penalties just before the end of the first period forced a six-on-four power play for the Pioneers. The Dutchwomen were pressured as Sacred Heart made five shots in the span of those two minutes. But sophomore goaltender Kate Gallagher (Minneapolis, Minn.), who made her first start on the season, helped the Dutchwomen defense prevented the Pioneers scoring the first goal of the game.

After the successful penalty kill the Dutchwomen's offense went back to work. In the span of one minute, Arsenault snuck through the Pioneer defense twice to make close shots at the goal but were deflected by goalie Emily Siira.

Sixteen into the second period, a pile up outside Sacred Heart's goal allowed sophomore Lauren Hoffman (Marcy, N.Y.) to score the first goal of the game with help from junior defenseman Perri Maduri (Westford, Mass.) and forward Marissa Gentile (Groton, Mass.).

However the Pioneers responded 30 seconds later. Tara Kent found the net after a pass from Jamie Mey and Sarah Delaney to tie the game at one.

While leading her team with seven shots in the game, three in the second period, Arseneault's patience paid off as her left-side shot from a cross pass by Maduri found the right side of the net and give the Dutchwomen the lead just before the second intermission.

Junior forward Callee Heywood (Innisfail, Alb.) extended the lead with a goal 15:53 into the third period. A forward pass by sophomore forward Lauren Hoffman allowed Heywood to make a shot from the right side of the goal.

The Dutchwomen were pressured again at the end of the third period when a Union penalty at 17:59 allowed the Pioneers to play six-on-four, leaving an empty net. But Union's defense prevented the Pioneers from scoring.

The win is Gallagher's first on the season.

The Dutchwomen will hit the road again as they will head to Storrs, Conn. to face the University of Connecticut on Oct. 24. Faceoff is at 7 p.m.
