Saints Use Four-Goal Third to Sweep Colonials

Boxscore

PITTSBURGH, PA -- The No. 8/10 St. Lawrence University women's hockey team used a four-goal third period to rally past Robert Morris University at Clearview Arena in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday.  The Saints (2-1-1) battled out of a two-goal deficit in the second period to rally for a 6-3 victory and sweep the Colonials (1-5-0) in the weekend series.

The Saints' comeback efforts were led by the team's underclassmen, as the group scored five unanswered goals in the final 30 minutes to seal the victory.

"I thought we stayed disciplined to the process," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells.  "By doing so, we were rewarded with some very nice skilled plays in the third period to help us get the win."

The only St. Lawrence goal scored by an upperclassman was the opening goal of the game, which came off the stick of junior Kirsten Roach at 11:53 of the first period.  First-year Michelle Ng poked the puck free of a scrum at the top of the goal mouth to Roach, who beat Robert Morris goalie Daneca Butterfield for her first goal of the season.

The Colonials would answer less than four minutes later to level the score at 1-1 and send the game to the first intermission tied.  Dayna Newsom got the play started for the home team, as she found Whitney Pappas for a long slap shot that sailed over the glove of St. Lawrence senior goalie Maxie Weisz, who played in her first start collegiate game since January 26, 2008.  Pappas' goal was her third of the season and came at 15:11, which capped a solid period for the home team as they finished with an impressive 13-7 advantage in shots on goal.

Robert Morris would build on their momentum early in the second period, as they scored two goals in a span of 3:19 to open up a 3-1 advantage.  Sara O'Malley beat Weisz for an unassisted goal only 2:03 into the stanza to give the Colonials their first lead at 2-1.  Jordan Riley then hammered a one-timer off of a pretty drop-pass from Brianna Delaney behind Weisz at 5:22 for a 3-1 cushion.  The goal was Riley's first of the season.

St. Lawrence would cut its deficit in half midway through the second period as sophomore Alley Bero scored her second goal of the weekend to bring the score to 3-2.  Skating with a 5-on-3 advantage, Bero stuffed a rebound past Butterfield for a power play tally that began to swing the momentum towards the visitors.  Senior captain Tara Akstull was credited with an assist on the goal which capped the second period scoring.

St. Lawrence, which out-shot Robert Morris 14-7 in the second, opted to split the time in goal between Weisz and senior assistant captain Brittony Chartier.  Chartier entered the game halfway through the second period, and kept the Colonials off the scoreboard.  Butterfield was able to keep her team ahead heading to the third period for the second consecutive day, however, with a 13-save stanza.

The final period belonged to the Scarlet and Brown, as they managed three goals in a span of 5:09 to take a 5-3 lead.  First-year student Kayla Sullivan scored her first collegiate goal to knot things up at 3-3 at 5:09 of the third, with classmate Kelly Sabatine and sophomore Vanessa Emond assisting on the goal.  Rookie Jamie Goldsmith gave the Saints back the lead for the first time since the opening period with her third goal of the season at 8:47, while Sabatine followed with her first collegiate goal only 1:31 later.  Bero assisted on Sabatine's goal which opened up a 5-3 lead with 9:42 left in regulation.

Chartier provided plenty of defense for the Saints, as she stopped all eight of the shots she faced in the third period.  Emond would put the finishing touches on St. Lawrence's comeback win with an empty net goal at 19:05 to bring the score to its final of 6-3.

The Saints finished with a 38-28 advantage in shots on goal and held Robert Morris without a power play tally in the game (0-for-4).  St. Lawrence was 1-of-7 with a player advantage.

Weisz made 15 saves in the opening half of the game for St. Lawrence including 12 in the first period.  Butterfield finished with 32 stops in the contest for the Colonials.

St. Lawrence will gear up for a crucial weekend at Appleton Arena next week, as the Scarlet and Brown will face nationally-ranked Boston University and New Hampshire on October 23 and 24.  The puck will drop on the Saints and Terriers at 7:00pm on Friday night.
