Colgate Breaks Into Win Column
STORRS, Conn. -- Freshmen Jordan Brickner (Lake Forest, Ill.) and
Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) each tallied their first career
goal, with Phillips putting in the game-winning goal, as the
Raiders defeated the University of Connecticut, 5-2, Saturday
evening at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs, Conn.
Seniors Ali Edell (Mountain Lakes, N.J.) and Marissa Dombovy
(Webster, N.Y.) both netted their first goals of the season and
junior Jacquie Colburne (Calgary, Alta.) added a late goal in the
third quarter to cap off the Colgate scorers.
Brickner was the first to score, collecting an unassisted goal at
11:31 in the first period. The Raiders went into the second period
with a 1-0 advantage but a flurry of action on both ends of the ice
resulted in combined five-goal stanza.
Edell would start off the scoring in the second, earning a quick
goal in the fifth minute of play. A little over a minute later
Phillips would earn the eventual game-winner and her first career
goal, putting the puck past sophomore goaltender Alexandra Garcia
at 6:11.
With Colgate holding a 3-0 lead against the Huskies, UConn stepped
up their attack, earning their first goal of the night from Monique
Weber at 9:48 in the second. The Raiders quickly responded,
regaining their three-point advantage at 11:10 as Brickner directed
the puck to Dombovy, giving the Raiders the 4-1 lead.
Jody Sydor would close out the high-scoring period with the only
power-play goal of the night coming at 15:29.
Colborne would round out the Colgate scorers knocking in the final
goal of the night and the only one of the third period, with less
two minutes remaining in the game. Jessi Waters (Menlo Park,
Calif.) picked up two assists on the night, while Katie Stewart
(Exeter, Ont.), Brickner and Edell each collected one helper.
Sophomore Kimberly Sass (East Amherst, N.Y.) started in goal for
the Raiders, earning her first win of the season after tallying 32
saves. Garcia made nine saves for the Huskies while Jennie Bellonio
picked up two saves.
The Raiders will host their 2009-10 season opener next weekend
when they face Wayne St. on Oct. 23 and 24. Game-time is set for 7
p.m. on the 23rd and 2 p.m. on the 24th.
