PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- Senior Katie
Stewart (Exeter, Ont.) tallied her first goal of the season in the
final period, but the Colgate women's hockey team fell to
Providence College 4-1 Friday night at Schneider Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Providence collected three second
period goals to gain a 3-0 lead against the Raiders. Friars'
Abby Gauthier opened the scoring at 4:30 to earn the first lead of
the game. Rookie Jessica Cohen sent in a deflected shot to
put Providence up 2-0, before Ashley Cottrell added a power-play
goal with 17 seconds remaining in the period. The
Raiders collected their first goal of the game in the opening
minutes of the third period, as they outshot Providence 14-9 in the
final stanza.
Stewart netted an unassisted power-play goal just 1:51 into the
period after bringing the puck down the length of the ice.
After picking up a loose puck in the defensive zone, Stewart
stickhandled around a defender in the neutral zone and beat out a
Friar's defender at the blue line. The senior finished off the
play with a high shot over the right shoulder of Providence's
Genevieve Lacasse.
The Friars would add one last goal at 13:31 to improve their record
to 3-1-1 overall, while the Raiders drop to 0-3-0. Goaltender
Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax, Ont.) made 27 saves, including 14 in the
second period. Lacasse held off the Raiders with 30
saves on the night.
Colgate will take on the University of Connecticut tomorrow, Oct.
17 at the Mark Edward Freitas Ice Forum in Storrs,
Conn. Game-time is set for 4 p.m. The Huskies just
recently defeated Syracuse, 3-2 this evening, in their home
opener. UConn enters tomorrow's match-up with an overall mark
of 2-2-1.
