Colgate Finishes In Draw Against St. Lawrence
HAMILTON, N.Y. (11/13/09) - The
Colgate women's hockey team tied ECAC opponent St. Lawrence, 2-2,
in a thrilling finish at Starr Rink on Friday evening. The
Raiders are now 2-7-2 overall and 1-2-2 in the conference while the
Saints become 4-4-4 overall and 2-3-1 in the ECAC.
Colgate was the first to go on the board as senior Katie Stewart
(Exeter, Ont.) cleared a pass from behind the net to classmate
Marissa Dombovy (Webster, N.Y.). Dombovy's forehand shot found
the back of the net at 9:00, giving Colgate the early 1-0
lead.
The Saints tied the game almost seven minutes later as Michelle
Zimmerman fired a shot in past Colgate goaltender Lisa Plenderleith
(Ajax, Ont.) from past the blue line.
After a scoreless second period, the Raiders came out ready to
score again in the third period. Freshman Whitney Routman's
(Northbrook, Ill.) initial shot on goal was stopped by goalie Maxie
Weisz, but rookie Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) gained control
of the rebound putting in an open shot behind Weisz' back.
With the clock winding down in the third stanza, the Saints made a
final push to even the score. After the Raiders were unable
to clear the puck from their defensive end, Britni Smith threw up a
shot that went just over Plenderleith's glove and into the net for
a shorthanded goal with just two seconds left on the clock.
St. Lawrence tried to repeat their game-tying play in the overtime
session, as Vanessa Edmond took one last shot in the final seconds
of the game. Her shot hit the post put popped behind
Plenderleith who quickly turned to prevent the puck from crossing
the goal line.
Plenderleith finished the game with 27 stops for the Raiders.
Weisz collected 22 saves for St. Lawrence.
The Raiders will return to the ice tomorrow when they take on
second ranked Clarkson tomorrow afternoon at 4 p.m. at Starr
Rink.
