Marcinko Records First Shutout, Union Ties Brown
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Freshman goaltender Alana Marcinko made 24
saves to preserve her first career shutout as the Union College
women's ice hockey team (2-8-1, 0-4-1 ECACH) played a 0-0 tie
against Brown (1-4-2, 0-3-2 ECACH) Friday night.
It was the first time this season that Union played in overtime.
The last time Union played to a no-score game was against
Quinnipiac on Dec. 8, 2007.
The Dutchwomen opened the game with excellent scoring
opportunities. Starting with junior defenseman Elsa Perushek, who
took a shot just off the right side but shot was blocked by Erin
Connors.
Later in the period, junior Marissa Gentile made a beautiful back
pass between her legs to junior defenseman Suzanne Ostrow but her
shot was just wide off the goal post.
In the second period, both Union and Brown played aggressive.
Freshman forward Nicole Bartlett took a shot outside the goal
crease but was deflected by Brown goaltender Katie Jamieson.
Sophomore forward Émilie Arseneault snuck passed through the
Bear defense and as she worked her way straight to the goal her
shot was saved by Jamieson. Union had another scoring opportunity
when sophomore forward Molly Kate Devin took a shot from the right
side but the puck deflected off of Jamieson.
The Dutchwomen did not let the Bear defense clear the zone
throughout the second and third period, when a shot was deflected
off Jamieson, a Dutchwoman was there in response.
In the third period, Union continued to play aggressive by keeping
the puck in the Bears zone. Gentile took a shot but was deflected
by Jamieson. Ostrow responded with a shot but was saved by
Jamieson.
For the second straight game, Union has not allowed a power play
goal. Although Union went to the penalty box nine times, Marcinko
and the Dutchwomen defense pushed the puck forward.
One of Marcinko's best saves was in the third period when Jacquie
Pierri passed the Dutchwomen defense to face Marcinko alone. She
took a shot from the right side of the goal but Marcinko blocked
the shot.
Union will conclude the homestand against Yale on Saturday at 4
p.m.
