Dartmouth Downs Tigers
HANOVER, N.H. - Senior Sarah
Toupal (White Bear Lake, Minn.) tallied a career-high two goals and
freshman Sasha
Nanji (Markham, Ont.) netted her first collegiate goal as the
Dartmouth women's hockey team skated past 10th-ranked Princeton,
4-1, on Friday night.
The Big Green (2-2-1, 2-2-1 ECAC, 1-1-0 Ivy) got goals from Toupal,
Nanji and sophomore Kelly
Foley (Boston, Mass.) and both Foley and Nanji handed out assists
for two-point games. Senior co-captain Jenna
Cunningham (Medicine Hat, Alta.) came closer to 100 points with an
assist to give her 98 career points, while junior Amanda
Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) extended her point streak to four games
with an assist. Senior goaltender Mariel
Lacina (London, Ont.) earned her second win with 21 saves between
the pipes.
The Tigers (4-2-1, 3-1-1 ECAC, 2-1-0 Ivy) had Laura Martindale net
their lone goal with the assist going to Sasha Sherry. Rachel Weber
took the loss in net, making 18 saves on the evening.
Dartmouth got on the board first, halfway through the opening
period on Nanji's first of the year. She got a pass from freshman
Camille
Dumais (Beaconsfield, Que.) and put a shot on net that was blocked.
Nanji stayed with the play and beat Weber between the pads for the
1-0 lead. Foley was given an assist on the play for her fifth of
the year.
Foley was back in the action again with 7:44 remaining with her
first goal of the season to push the lead up to 2-0. Cunningham
banked a pass of the boards and hit Foley in stride. She made a
move to the inside and the defender deflected the puck past Weber
for the score.
Princeton wasted no time in the second period getting on the
scoreboard. The Tigers scored 1:14 into the period on a 5-on-3
advantage to cut the Dartmouth lead to 2-1. Sasha Sherry put a shot
on net that was saved by Lacina, but Martindale was there for the
rebound and beat the Big Green netminder.
Dartmouth increased the lead back up to two goals at 3-1 thanks to
a power play goal from Toupal. She was camped out in front of the
net and Nanji powered a slap shot into the zone and Toupal tipped
it past Weber for the two-goal lead with 33 seconds left in the
period.
Play was even throughout the third period. Princeton was able to
gain two advantages on the power play, including a short 5-on-3
chance, but couldn't convert.
Toupal was able to add some insurance with 34 seconds left for her
second of the night, coming with an empty net. The puck squirted
out of the Princeton attacking zone and found its way to Trunzo,
who chipped it to Toupal in front of the net for the score.
Dartmouth got one power play goal in six chances, while the Tigers
got one with the advantage win eight attempts. The Big Green and
Princeton also played evenly in the shot column as both teams
registered 22 shots.
Dartmouth will be back at Thompson Arena at 4 p.m. tomorrow as the
Big Green will try to sweep its first weekend series with
Quinnipiac coming to Hanover.
