Cornell Blanks No. 2 Clarkson
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's hockey team used a solid
defensive effort and a pair of third-period goals to claim a 2-0
victory over the second-ranked Clarkson Golden Knights on Friday
night at Lynah Rink. The Big Red remains unbeaten in ECAC Hockey
play at 5-0 on the year and 5-2 overall, while Clarkson's
seven-game winning streak comes to an end and the Knights fall to
11-2-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
Kendice Ogilvie scored what would turn out to be the game-winner
four minutes into the third period, while Catherine White added an
insurance goal 10 minutes later for the Big Red. Laura Fortino,
Amber Overguard and Chelsea Karpenko each added an assist for the
Big Red.
The big story of the night, however, was the outstanding
goaltending of sophomore Amanda Mazzotta, who stopped 33 Clarkson
shots on her way to her third shutout of the season. Mazzotta
posted 12 saves in the first period, added another 10 in the second
and wrapped up the game with 11 saves in the third. Lauren Dahm
stopped 23 shots in taking the loss for Clarkson.
The game was a disjointed affair early, as play was stopped twice
in the first period to repair the ice in the neutral zone. At the
second stoppage with 4:37 to play in the first, the teams went to
the locker rooms for the first intermission. Play resumed with the
remainder of the first period, with both teams then switching sides
and starting up the second period. Cornell escaped the two periods
after allowing Clarkson five power play opportunities, killing off
them all. Clarkson had just one penalty in the first two periods, a
hooking call on Kali Gillanders midway through the second
period.
In the third, Cornell killed off a penalty on Laura Fortino to open
the period, and got a lucky bounce to go its way for Ogilvie's
goal. The puck bounced off to Amber Overguard, who sent it to
Ogilvie. The sophomore then skated in alone on Dahm, faking the
goaltender to the ice and popping the puck in the left side of the
goal.
Cornell's second goal came by way of a rebound in front of the
Clarkson goal, where Amber Overguard's shot was initially stopped,
but Catherine White got her stick on the puck, sliding it into the
net for the 2-0 lead.
Cornell finished the night 0-for-4 on the power play, while
Clarkson would go scoreless in six power play attempts.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday when it plays host to St.
Lawrence in another ECAC Hockey contest at Lynah Rink. The puck
drops at 4 p.m.
