Cornell Beats RPI for Fourth Straight Win
TROY, N.Y. -- Laura Fortino, Hayley Hughes and Catherine White
each scored a goal as the Cornell women's hockey team won its
fourth straight game, scoring a 3-1 victory over Rensselaer on
Saturday afternoon at the Houston Field House. The win lifts the
Big Red to 4-2 overall and 4-0 in ECAC Hockey action, while
Rensselaer falls to 3-6-3 overall and 1-2-1 in league play.
Amanda Mazzotta stopped 18 shots in the victory for the Big Red,
which went 1-for-4 on the power play for the game. For Rensselaer,
Sonja van der Bliek stopped 26 shots in taking the loss, while RPI
was held scoreless in three power play chances.
Fortino got the Big Red on the board in the first period, taking a
pass from Chelsea Karpenko and potting a shot past van der Bliek on
the power play as Cornell led by one at the end of one. The Big Red
held the Engineers to just one shot in the period. In the second,
the two teams skated for 19 scoreless minutes before the Big Red
tacked on to the lead, as Hughes scored her second goal of the year
with Lauriane Rougeau and Kendice Ogilvie picking up assists at the
19:41 mark of the period. Rensselaer got on the scoreboard 15
seconds later as Laura Gersten scored with four seconds to play in
the second, cutting Cornell's lead in half.
In the third, White scored her first goal of the year at the 12:21
mark, with Rougeau scoring her second assist of the night.
Rensselaer pulled van der Bliek with 1:33 to play for the extra
skater, but Cornell held firm for the remainder of the period.
Mazzotta picked up 12 of her 18 saves in the third period as the
Big Red withstood the late charge from the Engineers.
Cornell returns to action on Friday night, returning home to Lynah
Rink for its fifth game this season against a ranked opponent when
Clarkson visits for a 7 p.m. game.
