Dutchwomen Conclude Weekend with Loss at RPI
TROY, N.Y. - Freshman goaltender Alana Marcinko made 26 saves as
the Union College women’s ice hockey team lost to RPI 5-0
Sunday afternoon.
Allison Wright, Kendra Dunlap, Jill Vandegrift and Whitney Naslund
each scored for the Engineers. Both Dunlop and Naslund’s goal
were on the power play.
Alana Marcinko made a successful block at the start of the game.
Two shots were taken by RPI and Marcinko deflected both of
them.
Junior forward Callee Heywood took a shot from outside the crease
four minutes into the game after junior forward Marissa Gentile
stole a pass by RPI.
Gentile stole the puck from RPI and took a short pass to Heywood
but her shot just outside the crease was saved by RPI goaltender
Sonja van der Bliek.
Freshman forward Emma Rambo made a fast paced shot from the left
side of the goal but van der Bliek made the catch.
On the power play, after winning the faceoff, freshman forward
Rhianna Kurio immediately took a shot but the puck just missed the
post. Sophomore defenseman Dania Simmonds kept the puck in the RPI
zone by taking a shot from the neutral zone but the puck went wide
right.
Just before the first period ended, sophomore defenseman Chelsey
Heinhouse went one-on-one with van der Bliek but her shot was too
high.
At the start of the second period, freshman forward Jeannie
Sabourin moved the puck forward, passing the Engineers defense but
van der Bliek deflected the shot.
Sabourin went forward again. After moving the puck between an
Engineer defenseman’s legs, Sabourin recovered the puck and
took a shot but van der Bliek made the catch.
Naslund went around the back of the net with the puck but Marcinko
was there to deflect the two shots taken.
Andie Le Donne chipped a shot outside the crease but Marcinko
deflected the shot. The puck hit the crossbar and the Dutchwomen
defense was able to clear it out.
Just as the third period started, Naslund shot off a cross but
Marcinko deflected the shot.
Midway through the third period, Kurio moved the puck toward the
goal. Her shot was stopped by van der Bliek but Kurio responded to
the deflected puck but was stopped again by the goalie.
Union will begin its season-high six game homestand starting with
Maine on Dec. 11 and Dec. 12. Both games are scheduled to start at
