Rookies Power Big Green Past St. Lawrence
HANOVER, N.H. - Freshman Camille Dumais
(Beaconsfield, Que.) scored her first two collegiate goals and
classmate Sally Komarek (Minneapolis, Minn.) tallied two assists as
the Dartmouth women's hockey team upset seventh-ranked St.
Lawrence, 4-2, on Friday night.
The Big Green (1-1-1, 1-1-1 ECAC Hockey) got the eventual
game-winner from senior co-captain Sarah
Parsons (Dover, Mass.), while junior Amanda
Trunzo (Andover, Minn.) scored for the second-straight contest.
Parsons also added an assist for a two-point night. Senior Mariel
Lacina (London, Ont.) started between the pipes and made 20 saves
to earn her first win of the year.
The Saints (4-3-3, 2-2-0 ECAC Hockey) had Kelly Sabatine and
Vanessa Emard each scored with Michelle Ng and Alley Bero assisting
on the two goals. Brittany Chartier got the start in net and made
28 saves in the crease in the loss.
Both St. Lawrence and Dartmouth played evenly for the first 15
minutes. Then the Saints were able to take a quick 2-0 lead with
two shorthanded goals coming 25 seconds apart. Sabatine got a pass
from Michelle Ng and broke into the Dartmouth zone, beating Lacina
top shelf for the 1-0 lead. Vanessa Emond scored another
shorthanded goal with 2:12 remaining in the period to give the
Saints a 2-0 lead.
Trunzo fired back, going end-to-end and burying the puck past
Chartier to cut the lead to 2-1. Parsons was credited with an
assist as she gave a streaking Trunzo the puck in the defensive
zone.
Dartmouth evened the score at 2-2, four minutes into the second
frame on a nice hook up by the rookies. Komarek slid the puck to
classmate Sasha
Nanji (Markham, Ont.) and she found an open Dumais across the
crease at the far post. Dumais was calm and shoveled the puck to
the back of the net.
In the third period, the Big Green took control and outplayed the
Saints in the frame. Parsons netted the game-winner with 10:34
remaining in the game on a harmless shot that was deflected by the
defense and into the net to give Dartmouth its first lead at
3-2.
Dumais added insurance just over two minutes later with her second
of the night on the power play to give the Big Green a huge 4-2
victory over the nationally-ranked Saints.
The Big Green certainly had its chances on the man advantage as
Dartmouth went 2-for-10 with the extra skater, while St. Lawrence
managed no power play goals in four opportunities. The Big Green
outshot the Saints 32-22 in the win.
Dartmouth will be back at it tomorrow at 4 p.m. as another
nationally-ranked comes to Thompson as No. 2 Clarkson visits
Hanover after defeating Harvard tonight 2-1.
