Big Red Rolls on the Road
SCHENECTADY, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's hockey team scored its
second shutout of the season on Friday, defeated Union by a 4-0
score at Messa Rink in Schenectady, N.Y. The win sends the Big Red
to 3-2 on the year and 3-0 in ECAC Hockey action, while Union falls
to 2-7 overall and 0-3 in league play.
Laura Danforth scored a pair of goals for the Big Red, which also
got goals from Melanie Jue and Hayley Hughes. Karlee Overguard had
a pair of assists, with Danforth, Amanda Young, Kendice Ogilvie and
Amber Overguard also chipping in an assist.
Cornell got on the board at the 5:55 mark of the first period when
Jue scored a power-play tally from Danforth. Danforth made the
score 2-0 just a minute and a half later off an assist from Ogilvie
as the Big Red went to the intermission up by two.
After a scoreless second period that did not see a penalty called,
Cornell got its power play working in the third, as Danforth scored
her second goal of the game, taking a feed from Young to put the
puck past Union netminder Kate Gallagher at the 15:11 mark of the
third. Three and minutes later, Hughes added another power-play
goal for good measure, with the Overguard sisters each receiving an
assist on the play.
Cornell went 3-for-4 on the power play for the game and was not
whistled for a penalty during the contest.
Gallagher picked up 38 saves in goal for the Dutchwomen, while
Cornell's Amanda Mazzotta stopped all 11 shots she faced for the
game.
Cornell returns to action on Saturday when it takes on Rensselaer
in a 2:30 p.m. contest in Troy, N.Y.
