Saints Earn Tie with Visiting Bobcats
St. Lawrence University first-year student Jamie Goldsmith scored her 5th goal of the season in the third period of Saturday's game against Quinnipiac University to help the Saints rally for a 2-2 tie with the Bobcats at Appleton Arena.
The tie moves the Scarlet and Brown to 7-5-5 on the season and 4-3-2 in ECAC Hockey play, while the Bobcats earn a point in the conference standings and improve to 7-6-5 (4-2-4). St. Lawrence's fifth draw of the season ties the University record (5) set in the 2004-2005 season.
"Our team continued to battle even when things weren't going our way," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "Brittony (Chartier) came through with some big saves for us again as we were really tested Quinnipiac."
Sophomore Vanessa Emond, the Saints' leading scorer thus far in 2009-2010, gave her team a 1-0 lead at 9:38 of the first period, the lone goal of the stanza. The Levis, QC native beat a Bobcat defender into the slot and sniped a wrist shot over the left shoulder of Quinnipiac goalie Victoria Vigilanti for her 11th goal of the season. Sophomore defenseman Josee Belanger earned her first assist of the season on the goal, while senior captain Tara Akstull also picked up a helper.
Quinnipiac played one of their best periods of the season in the second, outshooting the Scarlet and Brown 17-7 and scored a pair of goals to take a 2-1 lead through 40:00 minutes. Kallie Flor tied the game at 1-1 at 8:51 when she pounced on a rebound to Chartier's left and scored her fourth goal of the season.
Though Chartier made 15 crucial saves in the frame, including a fantastic glove stop on Kate Wheeler, the Bobcats took a 2-1 lead at 16:02 when Janine Duffy netted her seventh goal of the season. The goal was very similar to Quinnipiac's opening tally, as Duffy tapped a rebound through Chartier's pads and across the goal line to cap the second period's scoring. Regan Boulton and Felica Vieweg were credited with assists.
Despite struggling in the second period, St. Lawrence was able to rebound in the third and outshoot the Bobcats 11-7. Though Vigilanti played well between the pipes, she was unable to keep Goldsmith from tying the game only 4:17 in the frame. Emond got the play started by skating the puck behind the Quinnipiac goal, then chipping a pass to classmate Alley Bero at the near post. Bero made a heads-up play, sliding the puck through the crease to a wide-open Goldsmith who finished the play to tie the game at 2-2.
The remainder of the contest belonged to the goaltenders, as Chartier and Vigilanti were sound between the pipes. St. Lawrence had a flurry of chances around the visitor's goal, including the only four shots in the overtime period, but was unable to come away with the game-winner.
St. Lawrence and Quinnipiac each finished with 30 shots in the game, with Chartier and Vigilanti making 28 stops a piece. The Bobcats were 1-for-2 on the power play, while the Scarlet and Brown were 0-for-1.
The Saints will put a seven-game unbeaten streak at Appleton Arena on the line next weekend when they welcome the No. 1 team in the country, Mercyhurst College, to town for a pair of non-conference games. The puck will drop on the opener on Friday, December 11th at 7:00pm.
