Big Red Blank Brown
ITHACA, N.Y. -- The Cornell women's ice hockey team dominated
play and eventually wore down Brown in a methodical 5-0 win over
the Bears on Saturday afternoon at Lynah Rink. Liz Zorn and Chelsea
Karpekno had a goal and an assist each and Amanda Mazzotta
registered her fifth shutout of the season to help Cornell improve
to 8-4-2 (7-1-2 ECAC Hockey). The Bears fell to 1-10-3 with the
loss (0-7-3 ECAC Hockey).
All five goals came in the second half of a period, with the Big
Red attacking and eventually wearing down the Bears' defense.
Cornell held a dominant edge in territorial control throughout, and
five different players cashed in with goals. Both Karpenko and Zorn
had goals and assists, while Hayley Hughes, Laura Fortino and
Karlee Overguard also lit the lamp. Catherine White and Melanie Jue
assisted on third period scores, while Lauriane Rougeau had a
helper on the game's first score.
While the first snowfall in Ithaca this winter commenced
outside, the Big Red offense was red-hot, holding a commanding 40-8
edge in shots on goal in the victory. Cornell outshot the
Bears 14-2 in the first period, but Brown nearly got out of
the session unscathed before Karpenko put away a power play
scored with 1:45 left with Zorn and Lauriane Rougeau each earning
an assist. That held up until Hayley Hughes and Laura Fortino
scored five minutes apart near the end of the second period, both
followng up their initial misses to put the puck past Katie
Jamieson, who made 35 saves in the defeat.
Cornell was able to pile up two more even strength scores in the
third to put the game away. Overguard made it 4-0 with
12:29 showing on the clock, while Zorn wrapped up the
scoring less that three minutes later.
With exams on the horizon, the women's ice hockey team won't be
back in action until Jan. 5 when it meets Syracuse at 7
p.m. at Lynah Rink.
