Saints Push Past Tigers
Dec. 4: St. Lawrence University first-year student Kayla Sullivan scored a pair of goals while senior assistant captain Brittony Chartier made 21 saves to lead the Saints' women's hockey team to a 3-1 win over ECAC Hockey foe Princeton University at Appleton Arena on Friday afternoon.
The victory moves St. Lawrence to 7-5-4 (4-3-1) on the season, while Princeton falls to 7-5-1 (5-3-1). The game was the first home game for the Scarlet and Brown since October 31st, which was also a 3-1 victory over Brown.
"Princeton came out so strong in the first period and really had us back on our heels," said St. Lawrence head coach Chris Wells. "They're a very gritty team, and we were fortunate to survive the first period. Brittony (Chartier) made several crucial saves throughout the game to keep us in it, and we were able to convert a quality scoring late in the game to put us ahead."
Despite the Tigers holding a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal in the opening frame, Chartier's play between the pipes allowed her team to hold a 1-0 lead. Sullivan re-directed a slap shot from the blue line off the stick of senior assistant captain Britni Smith between Princeton goalie Cassie Seguin's pads for her fifth goal of the year at 12:14 of the first period. Smith picked up her seventh helper of the year, while rookie Michelle Ng was credited with her sixth assist of 2009-10.
Princeton was able to tie the game at 1-1 only 3:06 into the second period, as Danielle DiCesare pounced on a rebound in front of Chartier and buried her seventh goal of the year. Though St. Lawrence held a 12-6 advantage in shots on goal in the period, Chartier made what may have been a pair of game-changing saves midway through the period after the Tigers had tied the score. The Saskatoon, SK native stopped two shots on a 2-on-0 breakaway chance to keep the Saints tied heading into the third period.
"I think, looking back at it, that was definitely a crucial moment in the game," added Coach Wells. "They had tied the game only a few minutes earlier, and I think that save helped curb the momentum in our favor a bit heading to the third."
St. Lawrence's offensive attack created several odd-man rushes up the ice against Seguin in the third period, but the netminder made several impressive stops including a fantastic glove-save to rob sophomore Vanessa Emond with 10:30 left to play in regulation.
However, it was a 2-on-1 try for the Scarlet and Brown that would eventually lead to the home team regaining a one goal cushion. Senior assistant captain Courtney Sawchuk flipped the puck high off the glass and out of the zone to sophomore Alley Bero. Bero moved into the Princeton zone with Ng to her left, and when Seguin was able to get a pad on Bero's slap shot, Ng was there to hammer the rebound into the net for her sixth goal of the year and a 2-1 lead with only 4:38 to play.
The Tigers worked to score the tying goal in the final minutes and were forced to pull Seguin for the extra skater with just over a minute left in regulation. After a Princeton timeout, the puck found Sullivan along the boards inside the St. Lawrence zone. With the Tigers' defense closing in, the Caledonia, ON native flung a backhand out of her zone and down the length of the ice and, perhaps fortunately, into the empty net to secure the conference victory for St. Lawrence, 3-1. Sullivan's second goal of the game came at 19:27 and was assisted by Smith.
Both teams finished with an 0-for-2 mark on the power play, and the Saints closed with a 28-22 advantage in shots on goal. Chartier finished with 21 saves to earn the victory while Seguin made 25 stops in the loss.
St. Lawrence will look to win its fourth straight home game tomorrow, Saturday, December 5th when they take on Quinnipiac University. The puck will drop on the Saints and Bobcats at Appleton Arena at 2:00pm.
