Raiders Roll Past Bears
HAMILTON, N.Y. - Senior Katie Stewart
(Exeter, Ont.) and rookie Brittany Phillips (Lauder, Man.) each had
a goal and an assist as the Colgate women's hockey team defeated
ECAC opponent Brown, 4-2, at Starr Rink on Friday night.
Sophomore Heidi Peterson (Hastings, Minn.) also picked up her first
career point, an assist, as the Raiders improve to 4-11-3 overall
and 2-4-3 in the ECAC. With the loss, the Bears drop to 1-9-3
and 0-6-3 in the conference.
The Raiders came out flying from the first drop of the puck,
outshooting Brown, 14-7 in the opening period. Their puck
possession transitioned into the games first goal 10 minutes in,
after a dump-in by Colgate was misplayed by Bears netminder Katie
Jamieson and came right to Raider forward Beth Rotenberg (Toronto,
Ont.). Her initial shot was denied by a diving Jamieson, but the
rebound found the stick of freshman Jordan Brickner (Lake Forest,
Ill.) who netted her fourth goal of the season, giving the Raiders
the early, 1-0, lead. Colgate picked up two more goals
before the end of the first period, with Stewart scoring on a
two-on-one opportunity after a Brown turnover at center ice.
Phillips netted her seventh goal of the season soon after with just
under a minute left in the session. Peterson's initial shot on goal
was saved by Jamieson but the puck popped right out in front if
Phillips who drilled it in the lower right corner.
The Raiders scored their final goal at 12:19 in the second period
to gain a solid 4-0 advantage over Brown. Stewart's shot was
blocked but Hannah Milan (Great Barrington, Mass.) picked up the
rebound putting a turnaround shot right under Jamieson's right leg.
The Bears scored twice late in the third period but
it wasn't enough to catch up to the Raiders. Jenna Dancewicz
netted both of Brown's goals, which came in the final four minutes
of play. Dancewicz' first goal came just after the Colgate
penalty expired, as the Raiders goalie Lisa Plenderleith (Ajax,
Ont.) came out too far from the net, giving Dancewicz a clear shot.
Laurie Jolin had assists on both the Bears' goals.
Plenderleith made 25 stops, earning her third win of the season.
Jamieson had 29 saves for Brown. Each squad scored once
on the power-play with Colgate going 1-5 and the Bears finishing
1-4.
Colgate will be looking for a weekend sweep tomorrow, Saturday,
Dec. 5, as they host Yale starting at 4 p.m.
