Weekend Update: Defensive Muscles Flexed

ALBANY, N.Y. -- Strong goaltending was showcased on both the winning and losing ends in ECAC Hockey contests Friday evening.  Of the four goaltenders on the winning-ends in league-play, all allowed only one goal or fewer in posting wins.

No 4/4 St. Lawrence 4 at Union 1:  Capturing its fourth consecutive win, St. Lawrence moved into first place in the ECAC Hockey standings Friday night, as the Saints outshot Union College by a 40-21 margin to pick up a 4-1 win at Messa Rink in Schenectady, NY.  The Saints had four different players score goals in their victory, which was the narrowest margin of victory over Union in the 11-game history.  Union's defense was impressive in the first period as it kept the offensive-minded Saints off the board in spite of being outshot 15-5.  St. Lawrence had to mount a comeback as freshman forward Lauren Cromartie scored early in the second period to give Union a 1-0 lead.  The Saints finished 2-of-8 on the power play, while Union was 0-for-5.  Junior Brittony Chartier made 19 saves in the game, including an 11-save second period, to improve to 16-5-3 on the year for St. Lawrence.  She was relieved with 1:52 left in the third period by sophomore Nikki Bongaerts, who made one save in her first action between the pipes.  Senior Lundy Day made 36 stops for Union increasing her record saves total to 2,085 all-time for the Dutchwomen.

At Rensselaer 2, Clarkson 1:  A pair of second period goals were too much for the Clarkson to overcome as Rensselaer defeated the Golden Knights 2-1 Friday evening in ECAC Hockey action at the Houston Field House.  Engineers' junior forward Allison Wright and rookie forward Alisa Harrison netting the two goals in the victory.  The win for Rensselaer marks the first time in seven meetings that it has claimed victory over the Golden Knights on its home ice.  The win brings the Engineers to 12-9-3 overall and 7-4-2 in conference play.  The Golden Knights are now 12-8-4 and 6-4-2 in ECAC Hockey.  Sophomore forward Melissa Waldie became the third player for Clarkson to score 10 goals this season as she tallied a goal midway through the extra-player advantage in the third period.  Between the pipes, sophomore Sonja van der Bliek stopped 28 of 29 shots, including 10 in the first period and 11 in the second. Her counterpart, sophomore Lauren Dahm recorded 24 saves in the contest, including 11 in the second stanza.

Colgate 5 at Brown 0:  Sophomore goaltender Lisa Plenderleith made 18 saves for her first shutout of the season and senior forward Sam Hunt recorded two assists to break the Colgate record as the Raiders beat Brown 5-0 Friday night at Meehan Auditorium.  The win extended the Raiders winning streak to five games.  Senior goalkeeper Nicole Stock set a new mark for career saves at Brown in the loss to Colgate Friday night.  Despite the final score, Stock played an impressive game against the Raiders, racking up 45 saves to push her career total to 2,497, breaking the previous mark of 2,490.  Colgate outshot the Bears 50-18.  The Raiders went 1-8 on the power-play and were a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill.

At Yale 3, Cornell 1:  The Big Red fell to Yale, 3-1, Friday night in New Haven, CT.  All three of the Bulldogs' goals were notched by the Yale special teams.  The Bulldogs' first goal came in the first period on a penalty kill as freshman defender Heather Grant scored the shorthanded goal.  The game-winning goal for Yale came in the third period on a power play goal by senior forward Danielle Kozlowski.  Cornell's lone goal was scored by freshman forward Catherine White and assisted by sophomore forward Rebecca Johnston.  Junior Jenny Niesluchowski made 25 saves in net for the Big Red.  Freshman goaltender Genny Ladiges stopped 25 shots for the win.  Cornell moves to 9-9-2 overall and 5-6-2 in ECAC Hockey play.  The Bulldogs improved to 8-11 and 4-8 in league action.
