Weekly Release: Second Season Started
ALBANY, N.Y. - After the holiday break, nine of
the 12 ECAC Hockey teams took to the ice to begin the second half
of the season in preparation for their conference stretch-runs.
No. 10 Princeton solidified itself as a force in league-play as it
scored its first series sweep of Harvard and Dartmouth. On
Friday freshman Heather Landry scored the lone goal and senior
goaltender Kristen Young made 31 saves as the Tigers blanked
Harvard 1-0. The Tigers scored three straight goals in the
second period to overcome an early deficit and defeated then No. 3
Dartmouth 4-1 Saturday afternoon.
No. 8 Dartmouth remains at the top of the ECAC Hockey
standings, as it collected three league-points last week. The
Big Green started their week with a 4-1 win at Vermont behind
freshmen Reagan Fischer and Moira Scanlon who each found the back
of the net helping snap a three-game losing streak. The Big
Green held a 42-16 shot advantage over Quinnipiac, but couldn't
find the net after the first period and had to settle for 1-1 tie
with the Bobcats Friday night. Junior goaltender Nanna Holm
Glaas made 41 saves for the Bobcats. Junior Jenna Cunningham
netted two goals, while senior co-captain Sarah Newnam added three
assists as Dartmouth blanked Harvard, 3-0, to take over sole
possession of first place in ECAC Hockey.
Harvard picked-up two points in the league standings as it handled
Quinnipiac by a count of 3-1 last Saturday. Kirsten Kester,
Kati Vaughn and Randi Griffin all lit the lamp for Harvard, while
goaltender Brittany Martin stopped 25 shots in net. Sophomore
goaltender Tia Wishart made 43 saves for the Bobcats.
Yale wrapped-up its non-conference part of its schedule by posting
a 2-1 record last week. Senior forward Maggie Westfal tied
the game with 13 minutes to play and senior forward Crysti Howser
delivered the game-winner 14 seconds into overtime for a thrilling
2-1 win over Providence last Tuesday. Behind 22 stops by
goaltender Jackee Snikeris, the Bulldogs blanked Northeastern, 2-0
Friday. The shutout was Snikeris' sixth of her career.
The Bulldogs only defeat last week came Saturday, as they nearly
battled No. 7 Boston College to a stalemate behind 22 saves from
freshman goaltender Genny Ladiges, but fell short 1-0 in
overtime.
Rensselaer took home third-place in the Easton/St. Cloud Showcase
last weekend. The Engineers were edged by North Dakota, 3-2
in overtime in the first-round of the tournament. The loss
saw RPI's three-game winning streak come to an end. The
Engineers had not lost a game since a 5-0 defeat at
nationally-ranked Dartmouth on November 8. Rensselaer
rebounded the following day as junior goaltender Sonja van der
Bliek stopped all 38 shots she faced to lead the Engineers to a 2-0
victory over St. Cloud State.
Brown started off the new year with a bang, taking a 2-1 decision
over the Northeastern Saturday night, as senior goalie Nicole Stock
notched 27 saves and took a shutout into the third period.
Sophomore defender Erica Kromm scored twice for her first two goals
of the season, as Brown came off the holiday break with a strong
overall performance.
Cornell tuned-up for league action with a two-game non-conference
set versus Providence. Three goals in the first period off
the sticks of Catherine White, Laura Danforth and Ashley Duffy for
the Big Red were not enough as they dropped the first game to the
Friars by a 4-3 count. The Big Red got back to their winning
ways Monday afternoon with a 4-1 victory over Providence in Lynah
Rink. Brianne Gilbert, Ashley Duffy, Catherine White and
Hayley Hughes all scored for Cornell. Kayla Strong earned the
win in net for the Big Red making 31 saves.
Colgate's freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass turned back 29 shots
in a 3-1 loss versus No. 7 Boston College. Junior Beth
Rotenberg recorded her fourth goal of the season for the Raiders,
who played in their last non-conference game of the
season.
