Weekend Update: Home Teams Produce Key Victories

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The battle for supremacy in ECAC Hockey continues to tighten as the final weeks of the regular-season unfold.  All home teams earned at least one league point with five teams winning their games and one team securing a tie last evening. 

At No. 6/6 St. Lawrence 3, Rensselaer 2:  Freshman forward Alley Bero broke a 2-2 tie midway thru the second period Friday afternoon, giving the Saints their first lead against a tough visiting Rensselaer team.  The goal would prove to be the game-winner, as junior goalie Brittony Chartier made 10 saves in the third period to help her team snap a two-game losing streak and remain atop the ECAC Hockey standings.  Saints' senior forward Marianna Locke notched a goal and added an assist in the win.  Neither team was able to get much going on their power play chances, as Rensselaer finished 0-for-5 to St. Lawrence's 0-for-2 mark.  Chartier made 19 saves to pick up the victory, while sophomore Sonja van der Bliek suffered the loss having made 13 stops.

At Clarkson 6, Union 0:  Junior forward Britney Selina scored two goals and assisted on another, and sophomore Lauren Dahm turned aside eight shots as the Clarkson won its second straight game with a 6-0 shutout over Union Friday afternoon.  The Golden Knights saw sixteen different student-athletes record a point in the win.  Clarkson out-shot Union 46-8.  Dahm recorded her fourth shutout of the season and ninth of her career.  Senior goalie Lundy Day stopped 40 shots in the loss.  The Golden Knights went 1-of-3 on the power play and killed off all four of the Dutchwomen's man-advantage opportunities.

At No. 8/8 Dartmouth 1, Brown 0:  Senior forward Sarah Newnam tallied the lone goal of the evening putting the puck past Brown's senior netminder Nicole Stock in the third period to give the Big Green a 1-0 over the Bears Friday night.  Senior netminder Carli Clemis earned her fifth shutout of the season, which is a career-high.  She made 19 saves to record her 11th win of the year.  Stock made an amazing 48 saves in the contest with 19 and 20 coming in the second and third periods, respectively.  Dartmouth went 1-for-4 on the power play, while holding the Bears to only one power play opportunity (0-for-1).

At Harvard 2, Yale 1:  Junior defender Cori Bassett and senior forward Jenny Brine both netted goals with an extra Crimson attacker, while junior goaltender Christina Kessler made 27 saves for her 10th victory of the season as Harvard extended its win streak to six games in a 2-1 victory over Yale Friday.  Harvard finished the game successful on two if its five power plays, while holding the Bulldogs scoreless on all five of their power play chances.  Sophomore forward Bray Ketchum scored the lone goal for Yale.  Freshman netminder Genny Ladiges finished the game with a career-high with 37 saves for the Bulldogs, while Kessler stopped 27 for the win.  Harvard finished 2-for-5 with the extra attacker, while Yale was 0-for-6.

At Princeton 3, Colgate 1:  Jeff Kampersal celebrated his 200th victory as the head coach of Princeton women's hockey with a key 3-1 victory over Colgate.  The win moved the Tigers into fourth place in the league standings with only five games remaining.  The Tigers' goals were scored by forwards Paula Romanchuk, Christine Foster and Heather Landry.  The Tigers out-shot the Raiders by a count of 32-19 for the game.  Freshman netminder Kimberly Sass made 29 saves in the loss, while senior Kristen Young recorded 18 for the win.  Colgate finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while holding the Tigers scoreless on eight attempts. 

Cornell 4 at Quinnipiac 4 (ot):  The Big Red and Bobcats skated to a 4-4 tie Friday night in an action-packed ECAC Hockey contest.  Cornell's sophomore forward Rebecca Johnston notched two goals, while freshman forward Catherine White picked up a goal and an assist.  Junior forward Janine Duffy scored two goals for the Bobcats while sophomore forward Kelley Davies and senior defender Trudy Reyns each picked up two assists.  Nanna Glaas stopped 32 shots for the Bobcats, while junior Jenny Niesluchowski made nine saves and freshman Amanda Mazzotta recorded 18 for Cornell.
