Weekend Update: Goaltending Highlights Start of New Year

ALBANY, N.Y. -- The new year brought about solid play between the pipes, as no game that ECAC Hockey teams were involved in featured a team that netted more than three goals.  All of the five games played last night were decided by two goals or fewer, including two shutouts.

North Dakota 3 vs. Rensselaer 2 (ot):  Freshman forward Alyssa Wiebe scored just 29 seconds into overtime to give the North Dakota women's hockey team a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Rensselaer in the first game of the Easton/St. Cloud State Showcase.  The Fighting Sioux improve to 11-7-1 while the Engineers fell to 10-6-2.  The loss also saw RPI's three-game winning streak come to an end.  The Engineers had not lost a game since a 5-0 defeat at nationally-ranked Dartmouth on November 8.  Both the Fighting Sioux and the Engineers posted 24 shots on goal in the game.  Sophomore netminder Sonja van der Bliek posted 21 saves in the loss for RPI.

Princeton 1 at Harvard 0:  Freshman Heather Landry scored the lone goal and senior goaltender Kristen Young made 31 saves as the Princeton women's hockey team blanked Harvard 1-0 Friday night at the Bright Hockey Center. Princeton's win moved the Tigers to .500 at 8-8-1 overall and 5-5-0 in league play.  Young was strong in net for the Tigers as she stopped all 31 shots she faced for her first shutout of the season and the 13th of her career. She also stopped 30 or more shots for the third-straight game as she has now turned away 123 of the last 129 shots she has faced.  Harvard outshot the Tigers 31-21 and had its biggest shot advantage in the opening period, firing 13 shots on Young while the Tigers managed six. Neither team converted on the power play in the game as Princeton had five chances and Harvard had four.

Yale 2 at Northeastern 0:  Freshman forward Aleca Hughes got her one midway through the second period Friday night at Northeastern, and senior forward Crysti Howser tacked on an empty-netter at the end, as sophomore goaltender Jackee Snikeris and the Bulldogs beat NU 2-0 for their fifth win in six games.  It was also the fifth time in that stretch that Snikeris has held an opponent to one goal or less.  Snikeris now 5-3-0 on the season has six career shutouts to her credit.  Freshman defender Heather Grant posted an assist, which marked the third straight game, where she has registered a point for the Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs outshot Northeastern by a count of 32-22 in the game.  Both teams went 0 for 3 with the man advantage.

No. 7/8 Boston College 3 at Colgate 1:  Raiders' Junior Beth Rotenberg recorded her fourth goal of the season early in the third, but it wasn't enough as the Colgate University women's hockey team lost to Boston College 3-1 Saturday evening at Starr Rink.  Sophomore forward Jessi Waters and senior defender Kiira Dosdall assisted on the lone goal for Colgate.  Boston College, ranked seventh in the latest national polls, opened the scoring mid-way through the second when freshman forward Mary Restuccia slid one by freshman goaltender Kimberly Sass.  The Eagles out-shot Colgate 32-28 for the game.  Sass made 29 saves in the loss while junior Molly Schaus recorded 27 for Boston College.  Colgate finished 0-7 on the power play, snapping an 18-game scoring streak, while the Eagles went 0-5.

Quinnipiac 1 at No. 3/3 Dartmouth 1:  The third-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team had a 42-16 shot advantage over Quinnipiac, but the Big Green couldn't find the net after the first period and had to settle for 1-1 tie with the Bobcats Friday night at Thompson Arena.  For Dartmouth, sophomore forward Amanda Trunzo had the lone goal for the Big Green, while junior Mariel Lacina made 15 stops in net to earn the tie.  For Quinnipiac, senior defender Trudy Reyns posted the only goal for the Bobcats on the power play in the second period, but the star of the game for both sides was junior netminder Nanna Holm-Glaas who pushed aside 42 saves, one short of her career high.
