Weekend Update: Holiday Showdowns Prove Entertaining
ALBANY, N.Y. -- St. Lawrence won its fifth consecutive home game
as it handled non-conference foe Ohio State, 5-1. Princeton
played No. 7/8 Boston College to a 3-3 tie Friday. ECAC
Hockey teams were edged in the pair of top ten showdowns last
night, but will get a chance for redemption in rematches
today.
At No. 5/6 St. Lawrence 5, Ohio State 1: St.
Lawrence senior captain forward Marianna Locke picked up her 100th
career point Friday afternoon, scoring the game-winning goal
against Ohio State at Appleton Arena. The No. 5/6 Saints
(9-2-2, 5-1-0) knocked off the Buckeyes 5-1 thanks largely in part
to a 39-20 advantage in shots on goal and two late power play
goals. St. Lawrence finished 2-of-5 with the extra attacker
while Ohio State was 0-for-3. The Saints improved to 4-1
against the Buckeyes in the all-time series. Saints' junior
goaltender Brittony Chartier earned the victory with a 19-save
effort.
At No. 2/2 Minnesota 3, No. 9/9 Harvard 1:
No. 9/9 Harvard dropped its first non-conference game of the
season, falling at No. 2/2 Minnesota, 3-1, Friday evening.
Senior forward Jenny Brine scored the lone Crimson goal on a
power play at 14:40 of the third period. Junior netminder
Christina Kessler made 19 saves for Harvard which falls to 4-3-2 on
the year, while her counterpart Alyssa Grogan also pushed aside 19
shots for Minnesota which improves to 12-2-1. Minnesota held
the final count in shots, 22-20, including a 12-5 margin in the
third period. The Crimson scored the game's only power play
goal, finishing 1 for 5 with the extra attacker. The Gophers
were scoreless on six power play attempts.
Union 3 at Sacred Heart 2 (ot): An overtime
goal by freshman forward Lauren Hoffman led the Dutchwomen ice
hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart Friday. Hoffman
scored a career-high two goals as Union earned its first victory of
the season (1-13-1). Freshman forward Lauren Cromartie scored
Union's other goal, the second of the game. Like Hoffman,
Cromartie registered her first career goal during the game.
Union's senior goaltender Lundy Day posted 41 saves for her third
victory since joining the Dutchwomen prior to the 2007-08
season. She made 11 saves in the first, 14 in the second and
16 in the third.
Yale 2 vs. Quinnipiac 0: For the fourth time
in the tournament's five-year history, Yale will be playing for the
Nutmeg Classic Championship. The Bulldogs advanced to the
title game with a 2-0 blanking of Quinnipiac Friday night at
UConn's Freitas Ice Forum. Sophomore goalie Jackee Snikeris
made 17 saves for the shutout, and junior defenseman Alyssa
Clarke's first-period goal proved to be the game-winner.
Senior forward Crysti Howser added an insurance goal in the
third. Bobcats' sophomore netminder Tia Wishart stopped 26
shots in the loss. Yale will play UConn for the championship
Saturday at 7:00 p.m.
At No. 7/8 Minnesota-Duluth 2, No. 3/3 Dartmouth
1: The third-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team
took a slim lead into the third period, but Minnesota-Duluth netted
a pair of goals in the third period to defeat the Big Green, 2-1,
in a battle of top 10 teams. For Dartmouth (7-2-1), senior
co-captain Sarah Newnam continued her success with her fifth
goal of the season, coming on the power play. It was her
fourth in the last three games and she is currently on a three-game
goal scoring streak. Classmate Carli Clemis made 30 saves,
including 13 in the final period to go along with 12 in the opening
frame.
Princeton at No. 7/8 Boston College 3 (ot):
Junior forward Melanie Wallace had a goal and an assist to help the
Tigers 3-3 tie Friday afternoon at Boston College. Princeton
used two goals in the third period to get a lead, but the Eagles
scored with the goalie pulled to forge the tie. Princeton
senior goaltender Kristen Young made 22 saves to earn the
tie.
