Weekend Update: Holiday Showdowns Prove Entertaining

ALBANY, N.Y. -- St. Lawrence won its fifth consecutive home game as it handled non-conference foe Ohio State, 5-1.  Princeton played No. 7/8 Boston College to a 3-3 tie Friday.  ECAC Hockey teams were edged in the pair of top ten showdowns last night, but will get a chance for redemption in rematches today.

At No. 5/6 St. Lawrence 5, Ohio State 1:  St. Lawrence senior captain forward Marianna Locke picked up her 100th career point Friday afternoon, scoring the game-winning goal against Ohio State at Appleton Arena.  The No. 5/6 Saints (9-2-2, 5-1-0) knocked off the Buckeyes 5-1 thanks largely in part to a 39-20 advantage in shots on goal and two late power play goals.  St. Lawrence finished 2-of-5 with the extra attacker while Ohio State was 0-for-3.  The Saints improved to 4-1 against the Buckeyes in the all-time series.  Saints' junior goaltender Brittony Chartier earned the victory with a 19-save effort.

At No. 2/2 Minnesota 3, No. 9/9 Harvard 1:  No. 9/9 Harvard dropped its first non-conference game of the season, falling at No. 2/2 Minnesota, 3-1, Friday evening.  Senior forward  Jenny Brine scored the lone Crimson goal on a power play at 14:40 of the third period.  Junior netminder Christina Kessler made 19 saves for Harvard which falls to 4-3-2 on the year, while her counterpart Alyssa Grogan also pushed aside 19 shots for Minnesota which improves to 12-2-1.  Minnesota held the final count in shots, 22-20, including a 12-5 margin in the third period.  The Crimson scored the game's only power play goal, finishing 1 for 5 with the extra attacker.  The Gophers were scoreless on six power play attempts.

Union 3 at Sacred Heart 2 (ot):  An overtime goal by freshman forward Lauren Hoffman led the Dutchwomen ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory at Sacred Heart Friday.  Hoffman scored a career-high two goals as Union earned its first victory of the season (1-13-1).  Freshman forward Lauren Cromartie scored Union's other goal, the second of the game.  Like Hoffman, Cromartie registered her first career goal during the game.  Union's senior goaltender Lundy Day posted 41 saves for her third victory since joining the Dutchwomen prior to the 2007-08 season.  She made 11 saves in the first, 14 in the second and 16 in the third.

Yale 2 vs. Quinnipiac 0:  For the fourth time in the tournament's five-year history, Yale will be playing for the Nutmeg Classic Championship.  The Bulldogs advanced to the title game with a 2-0 blanking of Quinnipiac Friday night at UConn's Freitas Ice Forum.  Sophomore goalie Jackee Snikeris made 17 saves for the shutout, and junior defenseman Alyssa Clarke's first-period goal proved to be the game-winner.  Senior forward Crysti Howser added an insurance goal in the third.  Bobcats' sophomore netminder Tia Wishart stopped 26 shots in the loss.  Yale will play UConn for the championship Saturday at 7:00 p.m.

At No. 7/8 Minnesota-Duluth 2, No. 3/3 Dartmouth 1:  The third-ranked Dartmouth women's hockey team took a slim lead into the third period, but Minnesota-Duluth netted a pair of goals in the third period to defeat the Big Green, 2-1, in a battle of top 10 teams.  For Dartmouth (7-2-1), senior co-captain Sarah Newnam  continued her success with her fifth goal of the season, coming on the power play.  It was her fourth in the last three games and she is currently on a three-game goal scoring streak.  Classmate Carli Clemis made 30 saves, including 13 in the final period to go along with 12 in the opening frame.

Princeton at No. 7/8 Boston College 3 (ot):  Junior forward Melanie Wallace had a goal and an assist to help the Tigers 3-3 tie Friday afternoon at Boston College.  Princeton used two goals in the third period to get a lead, but the Eagles scored with the goalie pulled to forge the tie.  Princeton senior goaltender Kristen Young made 22 saves to earn the tie.
